The Chiefs keep on winning close games, and by the end of this season they may have won more close games than any NFL team, ever.
Through 13 games this season, the Chiefs are 12-1, and 10 of their 12 wins have been by one score (eight points) or less. That’s just one away from tying the NFL record.
That record is owned by the 2022 Vikings, who had 11 one-score wins. Living on the edge didn’t end up well for those Vikings, who finished the regular season 13-4 but lost at home in the wild card round of the playoffs.
The Chiefs will hope to avoid the 2022 Vikings’ postseason fate, but they’ll join those Vikings as the only teams in NFL history with 11 one-score wins if they beat the Browns by eight or less on Sunday. (The Chiefs are 4.5-point favorites at Cleveland.)
After beating the Chargers 19-17, the Panthers 30-27 and the Raiders 19-17 in their last three games, the Chiefs can tie another NFL record if they win by three or fewer points on Sunday: That would tie the NFL record for consecutive wins by three or fewer points, which was set by the 1986 Giants.
Those Giants went on to win the Super Bowl, so that’s some company the Chiefs would like to join.
