2024 Paris Olympics LIVE: Medals rain in for Team GB as Alex Yee digs deep to win gold in the men’s triathlon, as the women’s quadruple scull edge the Netherlands by the barest of margins

Britain have enjoyed success in the canoe slalom so far at Paris 2024.

Adam Burgess won silver in the men’s C1 event, while Kimberley Woods kayaked her way to bronze in the women’s K1.

Mallory Franklin is the latest British medal hopeful, with the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist going in the women’s C1.

Franklin has just negotiated the semi-finals, qualifying sixth fastest for this afternoon’s final.

Poland’s Alekzandra Jarecka has left Olympics fans stunned after she delivered an emotional reaction to winning Bronze on Wendesday.

She was competing in the team sabre event and had bested China for the honour of claiming the final spot on the podium.

After a match that saw both sides trade the lead, Jarecka levelled the contest with three sconds to go, forcing extra time.

She would go on to seal a tiebreaker point to ultimately win the bronze medal!

But some fans have noticed here celebration, with one writing: ‘I wish more of the athletes let their guard down and reacted like this. It’s so fun to watch. Congratulations to Poland.’

The medals are raining in today for Team GB, with Keiran Reilly clinching their fifth medal of the day!

It means Britain have won more medals today alone than South Africa, New Zealand and the Netherlands!

Great Britain now sit fourth in the medal table and are quickly catching up to France and Japan, having won six gold medals – two of which came today – five silver medals and five bronze medals. That brings their overall tally up to 16 so far for the 2024 Olympics.

Simone Biles delivered a brutal jibe towards MyKayla Skinner, claiming that her team had a ‘lack of talent and were lazy Olympic champions’.

It came as a response to a post from Skinner, who had lashed out on YouTube against Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey for having a poor ‘work ethic’.

But their feud has deepened today with former Team USA and 2012 gold medallist McKayla Maroney weighing in on the dispute and she’s delivered her backing to Biles, who claimed her fifth Olympic gold medal yesterday.

Anthony Jeanjean missed out on claiming a silver medal to Keiran Reilly, after he slipped over on his second run in the men’s freestyle BMX.

He cut an emotional figure afterwards, having dropped down the rankings from second to third.

A triathlete vomited at the end of the men’s race earlier this morning live on BBC One.

The athlete had finished the gruelling men’s race but was physically sick on live TV after finishing ninth with a time of 1hr 39mins 41seconds.

Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk revealed that he had actually vomited 10 times during the race.

‘I didn’t come here to come top 10 but I gave it everything I had,’ he told Canadian media afterwards.

‘I went for it, I have no regrets – vomited 10 times.’

Reilley is off to a fantastic star in his first run of the BMX final.

He’s getting some air on these jumps too, and is looking incredibly composed as he flips and spins through the air.

This is sensational! He wraps up his run by getting the crowd on their feet – but that’ll surely be a big score for the Team GB athlete!

Reilly moves into third place.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is set to get his 2024 Olympic Games underway on Thursday at 9.11am UK time.

The four-time major winner has endured a difficult season on the PGA Tour, agonisingly missing out on winning the US Open earlier this season by a shot to Bryson DeChambeau.

Should he win this week in Paris, he could turn his season on its head and take plenty of confidence into next month’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

‘The last time you guys saw me, I didn’t give a very good account of myself at Troon,’ McIlroy said earlier this week.

‘I’ve been asked this question a lot, where would an Olympic medal sit in sort of the hierarchy of my career achievements and it’s something I probably won’t be able to answer until when everything is said and done.’

He added: ‘It would be the achievement, certainly of the year (for him). It’s well documented that I haven’t won one of the big four in 10 years. It would probably be one, if not the biggest, in my career for the last 10 years.’

McIlroy hails from Hollywood in Northern Ireland but interestingly opts to play for Irealdn when it comes to the Olympics and not Great Britain.

Britain’s Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown has been knocked out in the Judoka women’s 70kg round of 16.

She was beaten by Tokyo silver medallist Michaela Pollers of Austria.

It was a tough result for Yeats-Brown, with her Austraian opponent claiming the win with a Waza-ari.

US tennis star Coco Gauff broke down in tears after being embroiled in a heated argument with an umpire at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old, the reigning US Open champion lost, 7-6 (7) 6-2 to Croatia’s Donna Vekic during the third-round of the women’s singles, and subsequently fumed at the chair umpire, after a contentious call at the baseline went against her favour.

Gauff had served long to Vekic, who hit a powerful return back to the American star, with her shot appearing to land close to the baseline. A line judge initally called the shot out, but the umpire Jaume Campistol thought the ball was in, and awarded the Croatian the point. She would go on to seal a service break and a 4-2 lead.

But Gauff was left livid at the decision and vented towards the umpire saying: ‘I never argue these calls. But he called it out before I hit the ball.

‘It’s not even a perception; it’s the rules. I always have to advocate for myself.’

She added: ‘It always happens here at the French Open to me. Every time. This is like the fourth, fifth time it’s happened this year.’

An emotional Lois Toulson and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix admitted their pride to have won bronze in the women’s synchronised diving at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

‘It’s a bit surreal to be honest. This is my third Olympics and I’ve always wanted to [win] so I’m happy and proud to get on the medal podium,’ Toulson said to BBC Sport.

Spendolini-Sirieix added: ‘I’m so happy. I usually have so much to say but I don’t have anything to say today!

‘Having my family here, doing it alongside Lois, it’s been a crazy two years. I’ve grown so much as a person beside her over the last two years not just as an athlete.’

Fred Sirieix has delivered another update after his daughter Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix clinched bronze in the women’s 10m synchronised diving on Wednesday.

Sirieix raised a glass of champaigne to his daughter and her diving partner Lois Toulson, before stating on X (formerly Twitter): ‘This is the most beautiful feeling.

‘I am bursting with pride, bursting with happiness and joy.

‘It feels like I’m going to explode!’

‘Girls, well done. Thank you very much for this amazing day, here’s to you!’

What a morning it’s been for Britain! They’ve moved up to fourth in the medal table, hot on the heels for France and Japan, having clinched 16 medals so far at the Paris Olympics.

GB now have six golds, five silvers and five bronze medals from the opening seven days of the Games.

But there could be more coming this afternoon, here’s a recap of the main events coming up later today and who will be flying the British flag in each event!

• BMX Freestyle: Kieran Reilly will compete in the men’s BMX freestyle final at 1.45pm BST.
• Canoe Slalom: Mallory Franklin, a silver medallist from Tokyo, will be hoping to add to Team GB’s medal haul in the C1 final which takes place at 2.30pm BST.
• Judoka: Jemima Yeats-Brown will compete in the women’s 70kg category later today.
• Swimming: Luke Greenbank is out to better his Tokyo 2020 bronze medal in the men’s 200m backstroke at 7.37pm BST. Team GB are also set to compete in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay later on tonight at 8.48pm BST.

Team GB’s Chantelle Reid’s 2024 Olympic boxing journey has come to an end, after she suffered a split decision defeat by Morocco’s Khadija Mardi – the fourth seed – during the women’s 75kg boxing event.

It was 29-28 on all of thejudges scorecards, but three gave their votes to Mardi, with two giving Reid victory in the last-16.

Alex Yee was left speechless following his dramatic win in the men’s triathlon earlier this morning.

The now two-time Olympic champion, who had clinched silver in the same event in Tokyo 2020, revealed what he said to himself in the final 300m as he attempted to close the gap between himself and New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde.

‘I still don’t really know what to say to be honest. I’m a bit lost for words and so grateful to everyone who’s been in my corner for the last three years. That was for them,’ Yee said to BBC Sport.

‘At 5km I was going through a really bad patch and with 2.5km to go I thought I’m going to give myself one last chance at this and not give up, and here we are.’

When pressed on what he was thinking in the final stretch of the race, he said: ‘Anything can happen. I am still just that normal guy, I work hard at my sport and I just love what I’m doing.

‘For me it’s amazing I can be in this position and these guys have worked so hard for me. They came and they lined the streets and everyone gave me a push today to get to Hayden. Appreciate him for just giving me that push and really extracting everything out of my body.’

Fred Sirieix celebrated as his daughter Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson claimed bronze in the women’s 10m sychronised diving on Wednesday.

Sirieix took to X (formerly Twitter) to state: ‘What emotions! What a beautiful moment! How many tears!!!

‘I’m bursting with pride, joy and happiness.

‘Well done and congrats @andreassirieix and @LoisToulson.’

Team GB were crowned women’s quadruple scull champions after a photo finish, with the Brits mounting a last gasp surge to snatch a dramatic victory off the Netherlands.

It was a jaw-dropping finish from the Brits, with Lola Anderson admitting she and the rest of the crew were ‘overwhelmed’ by the experience.

‘We spent ages working towards this and as a boat we’re so process-driven, we’re always looking to what comes next,’ she told BBC Sport.

‘But when you’re getting towards the end of a cycle like this, and it doesn’t get bigger than this, it’s quite overwhelming to experience this, but really grateful.’

Hannah Scott nadded: ‘It’s been a long time in the making and I still can’t quite believe it. I don’t know if I’m emotional yet but that will come. I think we were so process-driven today and the immensity of what this is, it hasn’t caught up with me.

‘The crew today were amazing. We kept it so cool to the end. We had the confidence, we’ve done so many hard miles in training and for anyone out there just go for it. If you think you can you might just do it one day, and that’s the really cool thing about the Olympics.’

An elated Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson admitted that they were over the moon to finish third in the women’s 10m synchronised diving on Wednesday morning.

Spendolini-Sirieix told the BBC: ‘I don’t think there is anyway to describe what we are feeling. We are so happy. We have worked so hard.

‘I am sorry we gave everyone a hard time be we always know how to close a competition.’

Toulson added: ‘There was a blip in the middle with our third dive which is usually one of our strongest. We stayed confident and calm.’

Right, let’s just recap on what’s been a sensational morning for Team GB.

Their medal count currently sits at 16, with the Brits having now claimed six gold medals, five bronze medals and five silver medals.

Two of those bronze medals came this morning, with Beth Potter coming third place in the women’s triathlon, delivering a sensational performance to claim her first Olympic medal.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson then claimed bronze in the women’s 10m sychronised diving event.

Meanwhile, Team GB’s hockey team claimed a 2-1 victory against South Africa, putting them fourth in their pool, before Alex Yee produced a sensational comeback to finish first in the men’s triathlon.

The women’s quadruple scull also dazzled to edge out the Netherlands’ to finish first in the rowing too, producing a sesnational performance to win in the final 100m of the race.

What a morning it’s been and there’s still plenty more to come, with Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick in action in the golf, meanwhile Kieran Reilly is set to fly the flag for Team GB in the BMX Freestyle.

Just as Alex Yee fights back to snatch gold from Hayden Wilde, Team GB’s women’s quadruple scull have also swiped gold off the the Netherlands’ in the rowing.

What a morning it’s been! Britain’s medal count has risen to 14, with four golds, five silvers and five bronze medals.

Team GB have struck again with another gold medal, with the women’s quadruple sculls overtaking the the Netherlands by the barest of margins!

It goes down to a photo finish with GB edging the Dutch by milimetres to take their second gold medal of the morning.

What a remarkable performance from Lauren Henry, hannah Scott, Lola Anderson and Georgie Brayshaw in the women’s quad!

I’m still in shock over that finish! We were wondering whether Yee had it in the tank to catch Hayden Wilde in first place after the second lap, but the Brit produced a stirring comeback to overtake the New Zealander to finish first around 300m from the finish line.

An exhausted Yee and Wilde sat down at the finish line and congratulated eachother on what was a sensational race.

The pair watched on as other competitors stumbled over the finish line.

Fred Sirieix inspects his daughter, Andrea’s, bronze medal after she and Lois Toulson placed third in the women’s synchronised diving.

Sirieix, known for his role as the maitre d’ of Channel 4’s First Dates, celebrated wildly as his daughter clinched bronze for Team GB.

Hayden Wilde of New Zealand has taken a pretty big lead on Alex Yee in second place here.

The gap sits at around 0-15 seconds with the Kiwi just crossing over the Ponte Alexandre III and Wilde is showing no signs of slowing down.

This is an impressive performance from the distance runner, particularly in the warm conditions in the French capital today.

Yee is also going strong and looks to be closing the gap on the New Zealander, but will need to be weary as there is a pack of runners over his right shoulder.

Can he push on to catch Wilde?

Team GB have also clinched a huge victory against South Africa in the women’s hockey with Amy Costello and Hannah French both scoring to seal a 2-1 victory for Team GB.

The result means Great Britain will climb to fourth in the Pool B standings, just one point behind Spain.

It’s 2-1 to Great Britain against South Africa in the women’s hockey.

Team GB have lost both of their opening matches at the Games this summer but have taken the lead against South Africa with 10 minutes to go.

Hannah French’s strike from close range gave Britain the lead in this match, with Team GB able to go on to leapfrog South Africa na dthe USA should they claim victory.

After clinching silver earlier this week alongside Noah Williams in the men’s diving, Tom Daley was back to watch Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson on Wednesday morning!

A proud dad! Fred Sirieix is in the crowd today watching his daughter Andrea compete at the Olympics.

But writing in his column with Mail Sport, the BBC Pundit and Channel 4’s First Dates’ maitre d’ admitted that watching Andrea compete gives him less stress than working with A-listers.

‘An inner turmoil grips my body when I watch Andrea dive. I remember almost having a heart attack at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, where she won two gold medals,’ he writes.

‘Thankfully Andrea handles the pressure a lot better than I do!’

The pair step up to the 10m platform and jump into the air. But it’s not their best jump!

Spendolini-Sirieix and Toulson appeared to be a bit out of synch there as they summersault head over heels before landing in the water. They’ll be handed a score of 60.3 for that dive after their earlier dive of 97.20 put them in second place.

Fears had arisen over the quality of water in the River Seine after the men’s triathlon was postponed with tests revealing that there were unsafe levels of E. coli in the French waterway.

The men’s race was subsequently rescheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday, even after organisers had spent £1.17billion to clean up the river ahead of the games.

Wednesday’s races had been given the green light even after overnight rain. Organisers had conducted tests of the water at approximately 3.20am EST and were compliant with the standards set by World Triathlon.

‘The results of the latest water analyses, received at 3.20 a.m., have been assessed as compliant by World Triathlon allowing for the triathlon competitions to take place,’ Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said in a statement.

Some men’s ahtletes had been angered by the decision to postpone Tuesday’s race – which is currently underway – with Belgiums Marten Van Riel writing on World Triathlon’s Instagram page: ‘If the priority was the health of the athletes this event would have been moved to another location a long time ago.

‘We are just puppets in a puppet show.’

So for both the men’s and women’s races, athletes are set to cover a total distance of 1,550km across the course.

Between each leg of the race, they will stop at transition areas to change their footwear and pick up their bike.

Here are the Olympic distances for both male and female triathletes:

• 1,500km swim
• 40km cycle
• 10km run

Athletes will begin the swim leg of the triathlon at the Pont Alexandre III bridge. They’ll swim up and down the river before exiting back at the bridge before picking up their bikes. There its hats and goggles off and onto the cycling section of the course that will take them towards the Champs Elysees, around the Arc de Triomphe, past the Grand Palais and back along the River Seine.

They’ll travel back towards the Pont Alexandre III along the Boulevard Saint-Germain, before dismounting and completing the run stage of the race.

Competitors will follow the same route across the river across the Pont des Invalides towards the Arc de Triomphe before finishing at the Pont Alexandre III.

The men’s triathlon is now underway with Team GB’s Alex Yee looking to better his silver medal at Tokyo 2020 alongside fellow Brit Sam Dickinson.

Dickinson has represented England at the Commonwealth Games and won gold in 2022. Today, he’ll make his debut at the Olypmics and will be hoping to follow up on Beth Potter’s achievements this morning.

The competitors are out and the swim leg of the triathlon is underway!

Some have raised concerns over the slippery conditions out in Paris, with Taylor Knibb coming off her bike in the women’s time trial on Saturday.

Even her mechanic slipped on the tarmac as he came to deliver her a new bike.

Team GB’s Anna Henderson subsequently went on to clinch silver in the time trial, but insisted that she ‘cycled like a grandma’ through the corners to avoid slipping.

Not for the first time this week, we’ve seen bike riders coming off their bikes under the slippery conditions out in paris.

The women’s time trial on Saturday saw several riders slip as they attempted to speed through corners, with one athete’s mechanic also slipping on the tarmac as he attempted to provide a new bike to America’s Taylor Knibb.

Ahead of today’s women’s triathlon, rain had fallen overnight in the French capital spelling some concerns over the cycling leg of today’s women’s triathlon.

Several riders slipped and came off their bikes during the race, with some withdrawing.

Guam’s Manami Iijima was the first athlete to crash, with Brazil’s Vittoria Lopes, Germany’s Lisa Tertsch and Belgium’s Jolien Vermeylen also impacted by an incident.

Lotte Miller crashed twice in the bike leg, with the Norwegian subsequently pulling out.

Germany’s Laura Lindemann fell with three laps to go, subsequently falling away from the chasing pack of riders.

Potter delivered her verdict on today’s race adding that she tried to stay as far in front as she could to avoid crashing in the slippery conditions in Paris.

‘I just tried to stay in the top five and stay towards the front and mainly stayed out of trouble,’ Potter said speaking to BBC Sport.

‘I got caught behind a couple of crashes on the bike but managed to stay upright. I was just trying to stay sensible and not get caught.’

There were concerns earlier today that the damp conditions underfoot in Paris could have an impact on the bike stage of the event with one rider coming off her bike during the triathlon. But Potter added she was well prepared for the slippery conditions.

‘It said it was going to be dry but it was obviously very wet. I live and train in Leeds so I am used to those conditions and I have done many sessions with the boys in the wet. I was prepared and I didn’t want to make any silly mistakes and I made sure I stayed on good wheels and tried to stay as safe as possible.’

‘I will root for my fellow GB athletes so hopefully Alex [Yee] takes the win today.’

What an achievement for Team GB’s Beth Potter!

After the race, the Glasgow-born triathlete collapsed to the ground in exhaustion and elation at her third-place finish in the women’s triathlon.

The Scot had previously competed in the 10,000m at Rio in 2016 and today earned herself an Olympic medal in humid conditions in the French capital.

‘I’m so happy, I was going for the gold but Cassandre and Julie were just too good for me today but I’m super happy to come away with the bronze,’ Potter said to BBC Sport.

‘I’ve come a long way in eight years and I am so happy to be here with a bronze medal.

‘I did it for me but I also did it for everyone who has helped me in eight years and believed in me from day one. It is for them back home as well.’

‘I dug deep and found something else.

It’s been a busy morning already with Team GB’s Beth Potter sealing a bronze medal in the women’s triatholon.

The event was given the green light earlier this morning despite concerns over the water quality in the River Seine.

Potter emerged from the swimming leg of the race in the lead pack. She maintained her position in the cycling with four women left battling it out for the three medals in the 10km run.

Pre-race favourite Cassandre Beaugrand pressed on to clinch gold to become France’s first Olympic triathlon champion.

Potter, 32, would finish third in the race behind Switzerland’s Julie Derron earning Team GB their 13th medal of the Games.
