Canada’s Leylah Fernandez eliminated in first-round upset in Cleveland

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez was ousted in the opening round of the Tennis in the Land singles event in Cleveland after losing 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 to Romania’s Ana Bogdan on Tuesday.

Bogdan, ranked 103rd in the world, had three aces and zero double faults during the match.

Fernandez, who is ranked 24th, was the second seed in the WTA 250 tournament. The 21-year-old from Laval, Que., had zero aces and committed 12 double faults.

Fernandez will stick around for doubles action with her sister, Bianca, as they’re scheduled to take on Brazil’s Ingrid Martins and Quinn Gleason of the United States.

Meanwhile, Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ont., fell to Switzerland’s Celine Naef 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round of US Open qualifying. Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino takes on Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium later Tuesday.

Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont., plays Croatia’s Petra Martic in the round of 32 of the Monterrey Open later Tuesday.
