I don’t have a great perspective on AI because everyone in my field seems to hate it, although folks I know in other fields aren’t bothered by it. I think it should not be used for creative purposes, but its value to science, engineering, and medicine could be transformative. However, maybe people in those fields feel differently, like, “Keep it out of our professions! Lives depend on our work. They’re just writing movies!”
I like to use it to analyze site statistics so that I can avoid spending time programming a chart with information I already know. Celebrity gossip posts do better than book reviews? NO WAY!
But, I think we can all agree that stealing other people’s information to train AI is terrible, and that is essentially what AI is: a collection of other people’s work, or even just their Instagram and Facebook posts. Kristen Bell certainly agreed last June when she took to Instagram to rightfully complain about Meta stealing information, pictures, and thoughts she provided for their own gain.

NEW YORK, Sept 23 – Facebook owner Meta Platforms (META.O) is planning to announce this week that it has secured deals with actors including Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, and John Cena to give voice to its Meta AI chatbot, a source familiar with the company’s plans told Reuters on Monday.
Wait, what’s that? Come again? Kristen Bell will be the voice of the AI chatbot she thought should have been discontinued just three months ago? What happened? I don’t understand. Oh, I get it! She must be trying to take out the AI program from the inside. Yes! That must be it! You go, Kristen! Down with the AI Man!
(Just to be clear, while there are settings you can adjust to ask AI not to scrape your information on Facebook and Instagram, putting up a post asking Meta not to do so won’t actually work.)
