Aussie named Scotland skipper to face Wallabies, as his ex-Tah bro set for debut

Australian-born centre Sione Tuipulotu will captain Scotland in their November internationals, including a clash with the Wallabies in Edinburgh on November 24.

He will be joined by brother Mosese, the former Waratah who is one of five uncapped players in the squad.

Gregor Townsend, the Scotland coach has named an expansive 45-player group for the four match series, which also takes in matches against Fiji, South Africa and Portugal, with all being hosted at Murrayfield.

Tuipulotu, 27, born in Melbourne but who qualified through his Scottish grandmother, takes over the role from Rory Darge and Jamie Ritchie, who were also both included in the squad.

“The most emotional phone call I’ve ever had was Gregor phoning me to tell me I’ll be Scotland captain, but when he phoned to say my brother would be included was a pretty close second,” said Sione.

“Obviously you grow up with your brothers, you see everything they’ve been through to get to this point. To be honest, it’s a fairytale to have my brother there in the squad and I’m captain. I just feel really blessed.

“[Mosese] is very similar to me. He’s the most competitive guy I’ve ever met, and I know if his number’s called upon, he will take it with both hands and he’ll play with his heart. To be honest, we always joke about this but my gran back home, her favourite’s always been Mosese! I think he was the naughtiest so he spent the most time hiding out at her house so my dad couldn’t get to him. I know my gran will be so proud of him and I’m really looking forward to getting to work with him.

“My gran always wakes up in the middle of the night and watches me and Mosese’s Glasgow and Edinburgh games, and my dad always jokes around because the next day, she always watches his games back but never the Glasgow games!”

“Sione has been one of our key leaders over the last couple of years and thrives in that leadership role,” Townsend said.

“We’ve seen that in his outings as Glasgow captain and when he had the opportunity to lead the team against Chile a few months ago.

“He often sets the emotional tone and mindset required for the team and he also contributes significantly to both our attack and defence.”

Finn Russell and Darge were named as vice-captains, with mercurial five-eighth Russell among a clutch of players returning after being rested for the July tour of the Americas.

Russell will not be able to play in Scotland’s first fixture against Fiji on Nov. 2, which takes place before the Test window opens, which means Townsend can only select players based in Scotland.
