Why Victor Leaves The Toy Soldiers In The Tunnels In From Season 3

WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for From season 3, episode 6!Victor travels back into the terrifying tunnels in From season 3, episode 6, and he carefully places toy army men along the way. Throughout season 3, Victor has been intent on remembering what happened in town when he was a child, as he thinks it will help to understand what the area’s recent changes mean today. To accomplish this, Victor decides to travel into the tunnels to find Christopher’s ventriloquist doll Jasper, who he believes will tell him the story of Christopher’s tragic turn and the truth about the massacre from his childhood.

In From season 3, episode 6, Victor travels into the tunnels with Henry, as this was the last place where he saw Jasper. On his way to retrieve the ventriloquist doll, Victor lays down toy soldiers on the pathway, and becomes nervous when he realizes that his inventory of them is running out. Considering Victor has already ventured through the tunnels in From seasons 1 and 2 without the toy soldiers, his use of them in season 3 begs some questions about their deeper meaning on his mission.

Victor Uses Toy Soldiers To Find His Way Back Out Of The Tunnels

Victor Didn’t Use Them For His Past Trips To The Tunnels

On the surface, Victor is using the toy soldiers as a breadcrumb trail in order to easily find his way in and out of the tunnels. When Victor and Tabitha were traveling through the tunnels in From’s season 1 finale and season 2 premiere, they were largely going through the area aimlessly on their way back. However, Victor had found his way to the opening into the cave from the Matthews’ house through directions given by From’s Boy in White, which he successfully followed without leaving himself a trail back.

Victor’s last trip to the tunnels was in
From
season 2, episode 1, when he was sent by the Boy in White to help guide Tabitha back out of them to safety.

In season 3, Victor’s trail of toy army men allows him and Henry to quickly run back out of the tunnels after From’s monsters begin to wake up. As they escape the tunnels, it doesn’t appear that Victor picks up the toy soldiers, suggesting they may be used in the future to find the exact place where Jasper was kept again. Considering Miranda’s scarf was seen on the table by Jasper, it’s likely that Victor or others will use the trail of toy soldiers to reclaim the objects that the creatures have stolen.

Victor’s Army Men Seem To Have A Deeper Meaning In From

The Army Men Represent Victor’s View Of Protective Symbols

On a deeper level, Victor chooses toy army men to use for his breadcrumb trail because they represent protection and defense. Victor has been trapped in From’s town since he was a child, and one of the main ways that he engages with the world is through toys, drawings, and child-like interpretations of objects. When Victor uses the toy soldiers, he sees them as the symbol of an actual army that can protect him against the monsters, similar to how a child might use them to defend against toy enemies while playing imaginary games.

Victor’s long-awaited reunion with Henry in From season 3, episode 5 makes his story even more devastating due to one heartbreaking line.

However, many instances of Victor and Eloise’s drawings have had real consequences and connections in From’s world. Victor, therefore, may see that these toys truly could have a protective power against the monsters, even if they simply serve as a way to ward them away like the talisman. As the show has proven time and again, everything has a meaning in From’s mysterious world, so it’s hard to believe the toy soldiers would be focused on so heavily without having a deeper purpose.
