Everything We Know About Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Chandler and Monica from Friends, Kate and Anthony from Bridgerton, or Lorelai and Luke from Gilmore Girls, the number of iconic couples continues to increase. There is one specific couple though, whose love even managed to endure a 200-year-time change with all its cultural differences and not one, but many, literal fights for survival. Yes, Outlander’s very own Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) are by far the most impressive power couple, and their bickering only adds to the admiration. The only two couples that could potentially come close to Jamie and Claire are both their parents, whose love stories will be explored in the newest addition to the franchise, the prequel of the historical TV drama on Starz, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Talking about Outlander: Blood of My Blood is truly bittersweet, as it takes avid fans of Claire, Jamie, and all the other beloved characters on a crazy rollercoaster of excitement about finding out more about their ancestors but also sorrow, since it is a reminder that the original Outlander series is coming to an end after all these years. Let’s focus on something exciting though, and take a look at everything we know about Outlander: Blood of My Blood so far.

What Will Outlander: Blood of My Blood Be About?

Outlander: Blood of My Blood will provide double excitement as it explores the point in time where everything began and where the foundation for Jamie and Claire’s deeply-rooted love started. The show will follow two different love stories, one set in Scotland in the 18th century and the other unfolding during WWI in England.

The relationship between Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, will be explored in the setting of Scotland, while Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, try to navigate through the chaos of the First World War. At the center of the Outlander prequel will be the struggle of fighting for love when the world seems to be separated from such a feeling and exploring the approach of marriage from a political, financial, and strategic point of view.

Outlander is inspired by Diana Gabaldon’s novel series of the same name, but Outlander: Blood of My Blood is not based on a book. The Outlander prequel can therefore be considered a Starz original series, exploring new ground as there is no source material. The showrunner and executive producer of Outlander, Matthew B. Roberts, returned to the same position, steering the ship that is the Outlander prequel. Just as promising is the fact that the author of the Outlander novel series will join the continuing franchise as a consulting producer.

The Cast of Outlander: Blood of My Blood

While there are other series like Outlander, there is no doubt that everyone admires and will dearly miss the cast of the original Outlander series. Luckily, the Outlander prequel definitely stands out with new but also some familiar faces. Harriet Slater, who is known for her portrayal of Sandra Onslow in the drama TV series Pennyworth, will step into the role of one of the main characters, Jamie Fraser’s mother, Ellen MacKenzie. Jamie Roy, who initially rose to fame due to his role in Squeaky Clean Mysteries: Hazardous Duty, is set to step into the role of Ellen’s husband, Brian Fraser.

Equally important is the second couple at the center of the Outlander prequel, Claire’s parents. We Hunt Together’s Hermione Corfield and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’s Jeremy Irvine will portray the roles of Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, respectively.

There is an intriguing list of side characters, which is certain to stir up some drama but also offer some grounding connections. Most excitingly, though, there are a handful of names that will undoubtedly ring a bell for Outlander fans. Dougal MacKenzie (Sam Retford), Colum MacKenzie (Séamus McLean Ross), and (feel free to let your tears flow, because this one might evoke some traumatic memories) Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Rory Alexander) are returning, just as a younger version.

The Meaning and Release of Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Many are probably wondering where the Outlander prequel, which started filming at the beginning of 2024 in Scotland, gets its title from, but Outlander fans might know that there is a special meaning behind Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The phrase “Blood of my Blood” refers to a Gaelic blood vow, which was created by the Outlander author Diana Gabaldon, and was taken by Jamie and Claire on their rather unexpected wedding day. The vow goes as follows:

“Ye are blood of my blood, and bone of my bone; I give ye my body, that we two might be one. I give ye my spirit, ’til our life shall be done.”

Jamie and Claire’s vow embodies the complexity of their love for each other, highlighting the beginning of a very tumultuous journey filled with many hurdles but also a great number of beautiful moments. There is arguably no better way to introduce the Outlander prequel than by using a part of the quote that sums up the depth and weight of the show in such a profound way.

The first season of Outlander: Blood of My Blood will consist of 10 episodes, which will take viewers along as the main characters embark on their journey. While there is no specific information about a release date, it will most likely be sometime after the final season of Outlander aired. Since Part 2 of Outlander Season 7 will only air its first episode out of eight on November 22 on Starz and reveal one of the biggest mysteries of Outlander, the last season of the iconic historical TV drama will likely only be released in 2025 or even 2026.

Patience is of the essence, since Outlander: Blood of My Blood won’t grace our screens anytime soon. Rest assured though, because Outlander’s Season 7 as well as the final season of the historical drama will certainly evoke all the emotions in the meantime. Outlander is available to stream on Netflix.
