Teen surfer talks about moment shark bit into his leg at Pyramids Beach south of Perth

A teenager has relived the moment a shark latched onto his leg and “shook” while he surfed south of Perth on Tuesday morning.

Zachary Hlaing was in the waves at Pyramids Beach near Mandurah when he was bitten on his left leg and foot just after 5.30am.

“I just felt something grab my leg and then it kind of shook it a little bit and let go,” he said.

“It all happened so fast.”

Authorities say the shark was reportedly two metres long but Zachary, his friend and another surfer in the water with them at the time were not able to make out the species that attacked him.

“We saw a big tail just flap up and a big splash and then it let go and swam off,” the teen said.

The life-long surfer quickly headed for the shore.

“I was just in shock. We hopped on the boards and started paddling – kind of didn’t think anything of it really, just went in,” he said.

“(It) didn’t really hurt or anything because I was still in shock.”

He was piggybacked from the sand to a car where a towel was used to stem the bleeding and he was taken to Peel Health Campus.

With blood spurting from the open cuts, Zachary said he knew he would “need a couple of stitches” but was more worried about calling his parents.

“I was just trying to stay calm, not to get them too stressed out,” he said.

A surfer who was in the water when the teen was bitten described him as the “gnarliest dude” who was “so chill” the whole time.

Jay Reeves was chatting with the two other boys during a flat spell in waves when Zachary shouted he had been bitten.

He then lifted his foot out of the water, revealing an injury that was dripping with blood.

Reeves paddled ahead to get the car started, something he said he could do because Zachary was “completely relaxed”.

“(He) was just the most calm, collected person you’ve ever met, like as if nothing’s happened,” Reeves said.

“I looked up, saw the blood dripping and that was it, paddled in, no stress, completely relaxed and just the gnarliest dude.”

Reeves carried the teen from the sand to the car and wrapped his injury in a towel.

They got in the car, threw their boards in the back and took off to hospital.

“Even in the car, he was just fine,” Reeves said.

Zachary thanked Reeves for staying calm and taking him to the hospital.

The teen said he will be back in the water as soon as possible.

“(Surfing’s) pretty much the only thing I do in the summer,” he said.

Mandurah rangers have closed Pyramids Beach to 1km either side.
