His 56-year-old female passenger was taken to Innisfail Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating what caused the car to veer off the road, and has appealed for any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam vision to contact police.

As of Tuesday, 289 people have lost their lives on Queensland roads and more than 6,000 people have been seriously injured or are facing long-term trauma and hardship, according to police.

“Tragically, Queensland is on track to have more than 300 lives lost on our roads this year — the highest number of deaths in nearly two decades,” Superintendent Brett Jackson said.

“We want to do everything we can to prevent that number from rising, especially as we approach the Christmas holidays when road traffic typically increases.”
