‘Hitman’ Concept Trailer Puts Jason Statham in the Lead as Agent 47

Action icon and The Beekeeper star Jason Statham
is transformed into a video game icon in this concept trailer for a potential Hitman adaptation. Taking footage from Statham’s previous movies, the much-maligned Hitman movies that have already been made, and using a touch of AI (shudder), the footage (via Screen Trailers) demonstrates what a movie led by The Stath as Agent 47 could look like. And no doubt fans of The Mechanic star will be hoping it becomes reality.

The Hitman video games, which follow the mysterious assassin Agent 47 as he travels the world taking out targets assigned to him by the even more mysterious International Contract Agency (ICA), has already been adapted for the big screen twice before. But neither has really satisfied fans of the game, action fans, or, well, anyone, really.

Released in 2007, director Xavier Gens’ Hitman stars Deadwood and Justified actor Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47, and follows the contract killer as he finds himself ensnared in a political conspiracy and on the run. After that disappointment, 2015’s Hitman: Agent 47 tried again, casting Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Rupert Friend as Agent 47 and teaming him up with a woman in search of her father. Sadly, neither film fared very well, achieving just 16% and 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. Clearly, there is a lot of room for improvement with this particular action franchise. And the recent video game movie renaissance, now’s the time.

Is Jason Statham a Good Fit for Agent 47 in a ‘Hitman’ Movie?

But, despite his popularity, is Jason Statham a good fit for the role of Agent 47 in a Hitman movie? While the video game is a monosyllabic, empathy-lacking killer, The Stath has found success with his gruff personality, one-liners, and a wry smile. Portraying an accurate version of the character would require Statham to drop a lot of what fans have come to expect, though, of course, there would still be plenty of bullet-flying, fist-throwing action to make up for it. Do you think Jason Statham would make a good Agent 47? Or is someone else better suited?
