Robert Pattinson Calls Out “Crazy” ‘Twilight’ Hate 17 Years Later

Within pop culture, trends emerge where it becomes cool to hate things. While targets like superhero movies and Coldplay move in and out of the crosshairs, the Twilight movies are a permanent fixture of abuse from cinephiles. But, the franchise’s star, Robert Pattinson, says enough is enough, and that fans need to move on.

Pattinson played Edward Cullen, the lead vampire, in all five Twilight films, alongside Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black. The first entry, aptly named Twilight, was released back in 2008, while the final installment, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, landing just four years later in 2012.

Via DiscussingFilm, Pattinson said Twilight haters need to move on with their lives. “It fascinates me that people keep telling me: ‘Dude, Twilight ruined the vampire genre,'” the actor explained. Since Twilight‘s release, the vampire genre has found a renaissance, although few other movies portray the blood-sucking creatures as the sparkly-skinned loverboys found in the Twilight saga. Films like Only Lovers Left Alive, What We Do in the Shadows, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and the recently released Nosferatu, all put wildly different spins on the vampire genre.

Admittedly, Pattinson used to be one of those disgruntled fans, and repeatedly slammed the Twilight movies in interviews after they were released. But now, 17 years since the first installment was released, he’s moved on. And, he’s urging audiences to do the same, for their own sakes. “Are you still anchored in that sh*t?” he continued. “How can something that happened almost 20 years ago make you sad? It’s very crazy.” If he thinks Twilight hate is bad, he should be lucky he’s never starred in a Star Wars movie.

‘Twilight’ is Getting a Reboot

Whether you love it or hate it, Twilight refuses to leave the pop culture conversation. The original movies have their own die-hard fans, many of whom travel to Veronia and Portland in Oregon every year for an annual celebration of the films and their fandom. But, a whole new generation of Twilight fans are about to be introduced to Bella, Edward, and Jacob’s love triangle, as the franchise is getting a reboot.

Love it or hate it, it’s undeniable that the Twilight saga left a bite mark on modern cinema.

In 2023, it was announced that a new Twilight TV series is in the works at Lionsgate Television. Stephenie Meyer, who wrote the Twilight novels, was reported to be heavily involved in the new show. When the project was announced, many assumed it would be a new live action show, just like the upcoming Harry Potter HBO reboot, which was announced around the same time. But, last year, the series was picked up by Netflix, who confirmed the new show would be animated.

Titled Midnight Sun, the eight-episode show has been given a straight-to-series order by the streaming giant. Raised by Wolves‘ Sinead Daly is writing and executive producing the new series. No major casting news has been announced yet.
