Ruben Amorim reveals how his Man United players have responded to him branding the team ‘maybe the worst in the club’s history’

Ruben Amorim has revealed how Manchester United’s players have responded ho him branding them ‘maybe the worst in the club’s history’.

Amorim came out with the alarming comment after United suffered a seventh defeat in 15 games under their new head coach against Brighton on Sunday. The 39-year-old also damaged a TV in the dressing-room during a post-match rant at Old Trafford.

‘We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,’ Amorim admitted after the game.

Soon after, he apologised in a long comment, with some of it reading:  ‘I’m a young guy and sometimes I make a mistake,’ he said ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie against Rangers.

‘That’s why I don’t talk after the game. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake and then I get more nervous and go to the press conference really nervous and say things I shouldn’t say, that’s it. I don’t promise you I won’t do it again, but I will try to improve.

‘Sometimes I should not say it in those terms, but it is what it is. I understand I give you that headline and I am frustrated sometimes.’

Now, he has detailed how the players themselves responded to the claim after they were themselves seemingly targeted with the words.

‘Fine. They know me,’ he said. ‘It’s easier for them to recognise what I’m saying than the other people.

‘I don’t control what people think and say. It was a little bit my fault to create all that. It’s history, it’s in the past, so let’s focus on the next game today. Really important.

‘We need to win, to have time to train, to escape the play-offs and to have that feeling we need, especially at home.’

United are on the hunt for a top-eight finish in the Europa League league stage, but may have to win their final two matches to guarantee it.

In the Premier League, meanwhile, they are down in 13th and still struggling despite Amorim replacing Erik ten Hag as manager late last year.

After the defeat by Brighton, meanwhile, Amorim disputed that he had tried to shift the blame onto the players by being so critical of the team.

‘I was talking more for myself than for my players,’ he added. ‘If you look around, every time I speak – and I speak a lot – you push about the players are not good enough. I never put the spot on my players.

‘I’m not taking responsibility for the players. What I’m saying is that the message you guys show is I was putting it on the players. What I was saying is you have to look really hard for a Manchester United team that has lost seven out of 10 games and that is on me.

‘Because it’s the same players doing worse with a new coach, that is my only concern in the moment. I am not taking anything from the players, what I’m saying is we have to improve in the details.

‘The way we play, we are too nervous with the ball, really anxious. Then if you have limited experience in this game, when you follow in this type of context, it’s really hard to go up – especially in a massive club.’
