“As soon as I get to the bottom of this, I’ll get the next plane.” Studiocanal has unveiled a brand new trailer to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the noir cinema classic The Third Man, long considered Carol Reed’s all-timer masterpiece that has remained prominent all these years later. This black & white film noir thriller is set in Vienna, Austria, following a pulp novelist from America who’s investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, Harry Lime. Written by Graham Greene, directed by Carol Reed (The Fallen Idol, Oliver!) and featuring iconic performances from Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Alida Valli, and Trevor Howard. 1949 Cannes Film Festival winner The Third Man is celebrated for its endlessly quotable lines, the Oscar-winning cinematography, iconic musical score and for so many wonderfully entertaining, quintessentially cinematic moments. With a 4K re-release in UK theaters this fall – plus a 4K Blu-ray release. “Screening in beautifully restored 4K, the film is still as fresh and enjoyable as the day it premiered in a small Hastings cinema” in September 1949. “The encounter on the Ferris Wheel and the ensuing Cuckoo Clock speech has become one of the most famous scenes in cinema history.” Catch this on the silver screen whenever it plays.
Here’s the new 75th Anniversary trailer (+ poster) for Carol Reed’s The Third Man, direct from YouTube:
Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), an American writer of pulp Westerns, arrives in a bombed-out, post-war Vienna at the invitation of his childhood friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), only to find him recently dead. His suspicions are raised after learning of a ‘third man’ present at the time of Harry’s death, and butting up against interference from British police officer Major Calloway (Trevor Howard) & falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover Anna (Alida Valli). The Third Man is directed by acclaimed English filmmaker Carol Reed, just after making Odd Man Out (1947) and The Fallen Idol (1948), before going on to make Outcast of the Islands (1952) after. The screenplay is written by Graham Greene (and maybe Orson Welles). The film originally opened “in a small Hastings cinema on September 1st, 1949” before premiering at the 1949 Cannes Film Festival in France also in September. It eventually opened in the US a few months later in February 1950. Studiocanal will give The Third Man a cinema re-release in the UK on September 6th, 2024 this fall. Hopefully it play in soon in the US as well. Who wants to catch this on the big screen?
