Team GB star Toby Roberts revealed how he planned to celebrate after winning a stunning Olympic gold medal on Friday.

Roberts, 19, picked up gold in the men’s boulder and lead competition following a dramatic final stage that saw him jump up from bronze at the Le Bourget Climbing venue in Paris.

Roberts, nicknamed ‘The Terminator’, scored 92.1 points in the second last run of the event in front of thousands of cheering fans, before his close rival, Sorato Anraku of Japan, fell short on his ascent.

Roberts could barely believe what he had done when his gold was confirmed as he put his head in his hands, before he hilariously explained how he planned to mark his achievement.

‘Well, I won’t be sleeping much,’ he said. ‘I’ll get very, very drunk.

‘I am just lost for words. To find out that I got the gold in that moment, it was just truly incredible.

‘I’ve been training for this moment my whole life, and now I’ve just won. To say it hasn’t sunk in is an understatement.

‘I don’t really know what to think right now, but I imagine later, there’s just going to be a flood of emotions.

‘I’m just going to realise that, it’s a goal I’ve been training towards for for 10 years, basically. Just no words.’

Roberts’ victory, which was watched by his mum Marina, dad Tristan, grandmothers Valarie and Jill, along with his siblings Emma, Katie and James, meant he became GB’s youngest individual Olympic champion since Jade Jones won Taekwondo at London 2012.

Japan’s Ankaru took silver, while Austria’s Jakob Schubert won bronze, with Roberts’ GB team-mate Hamish McArthur ending in fifth.

Roberts’ grandma, Valarie, also paid tribute to the GB star as she said: ‘We are so very, very proud.’

The 19-year-old has always been tipped for stardom by those close to him ever since being hooked on the sport at the age of three.

During lockdown, his dad Tristan even built a wall for him in the back garden of their home in Surrey, which led to a breakthrough year in 2022, when he won a Lead World Cup medal.

Craggy Island Youth Climbing, who Roberts climbed with, also praised Roberts after his ‘incredible’ achievement.

‘He was really talented,’ said a spokesman, as per The Mirror. ‘He loved climbing outdoors with his dad. He basically was leaps and bounds ahead in the kids’ club, he would come in just with his dad and climb afterwards.

‘A lot of people noticed he was insanely good. It’s incredible to win gold. We’re obviously very proud. That’s awesome.’
