The eastbound lanes of Loop 202 are set to close in Chandler and Gilbert for a weekend on Friday for continued freeway widening and improvement, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
ADOT said that from Friday, Aug. 9 at 10 p.m., until Monday, Aug. 12 at 5 a.m., a three-mile stretch of the eastbound Loop 202 would be closed between Loop 101 and Arizona Avenue.
The closure would make way for the start of a $200 million project that adds two lanes in each direction of the freeway between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road, and one additional lane between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive — improvements on a total eight-mile span of the Loop 202, according to ADOT.
The project would also widen bridges and rebuild on and off-ramps within the next two and a half years, ADOT added.
The first weekend of work saw crews remove the top layer of ashplant before preparing to a process of smoothing the pavement, according to ADOT.
ADOT said funding for the project came from Maricopa County voter-approved Proposition 400.
