All Blacks coach Scott Robertson says his team is prepared to face “hostility” on their northern tour with Ireland expected to deliver the fiercest ‘welcome’ after the rivalry was reignited by Johnny Sexton.
The Ireland legend called out All Blacks ace Rieko Ioane for calling him a ‘c–t’ in the immediate aftermath of New Zealand’s World Cup quarterfinal in Paris last year.
Ioane responded briefly on social media, while Sexton claimed he did not aim to “kick up a fuss or to sell books”.
Robertson was asked about the incident and the expectations of a fierce reception in Ireland next month ad the team departed for their first destination – Japan.
“It’s a bit of a story, isn’t it, a bit of history in the channels of time,” said Robertson.
“I had a quick talk to Rieko about it, and asked how he thought I should discuss it. He said, ‘nah, nah, it’s all done, coach’.
“I think when people write books and bring up those moments, it’s going to create chat and talk, and that’s part of the game. It doesn’t matter what sport, you’ve got those little rivalries. But there’s still a lot of respect we need to show.”
Robertson said the All Blacks expected “hostility” in each clash this tour.
“It’s all part of it, the passion they bring and the singing,” Robertson said.
“They get early to the game, have a couple of quiet ones … it’s just a different atmosphere, and that’s what we’ll embrace and look forward to.”
Robertson has had to contend with an injury crisis in his pack with three key forwards left behind due to setbacks.
Ethan Blackadder (calf), Luke Jacobson (fractured thumb) and Dalton Papali’i (upper hamstring) were ruled out of at least the opening game. Robertson said he would have called in Hoskins Sotutu, who was initially selected in the All Blacks XV that will tour concurrently – but he too has an injury.
The setbacks have given an opportunity to youngster Peter Lakai who will hope to have the same impact that Wallace Sititi has provided since his elevation to the All Blacks.
The 21-year-old was part of the New Zealand training squad for the England series before returning to Wellington and impressing in their NPC campaign.
“Peter can play all three (positions), a hell of a seven or eight,” said Robertson. “He’s a young kid that’s taken all his opportunities, playing great NPC, had a great Super Rugby, high minutes and he gets to come away with us, with the All Blacks.
“He’s pretty humble, answering the phone and you can tell he’s got everything that’s required to be an All Black. I’m looking forward to seeing him go.”
Robertson acknowledged the injury setbacks had forced a coaching rethink.
“The last week’s been interesting, just looking at the dynamics,” Robertson added. “That’s why we’ve just paused, pumped the brakes a little bit on bringing somebody else in after the conversations the last few days with Hoskins (Sotutu).
“Just to have a look, obviously we’ve got a couple of guys coming up to provide training cover from the All Blacks XV. That tour’s been great, having them, so that they can come in, they’re over there so you can call someone straight in.
“But, they need footy as well. It gives us, like I said, those training bodies before a few of the crew go head up to England early.”
The injuries have also vindicated Robertson’s decision to give Sam Cane another tour despite his impending retirement from the All Blacks.
“Well it’s ideal, and it was for these reasons – also he was playing good footy,” said Robertson. “He knows his way around the north, he’s done it a few times. So, it’s good that he can be a part of us, we’re pleased.”
