Amazon MGM Studios developing a Poltergeist TV series

Prepare for a scary dose of small screen static, because a Poltergeist television series is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios.

Per Variety’s report, Kalinda Vazquez (Star Trek: Discovery) and Robbie Thompson (Supernatural) have been tasked with summoning the spirit of Tobe Hooper’s 1982 horror film to the small-screen.

Steven Spielberg, who played a large part in bringing the $120 million grossing supernatural smash to the big-screen, will produce through Amblin Television, with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin TV attached as executive producers.

Poltergeist centered on the Freeling family, made up of Steve (Craig T. Nelson), Diane (JoBeth Williams), Dana (Dominique Dunne), Robbie (Oliver Robins), and five-year-old Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke), who communicates with ghosts through the television set. Initially the spirits are playful, before turning unexpectedly menacing, transporting Carol Ann to the other side, forcing the family to enlist the help of parapsychologists and exorcists to help.

Two sequels of diminishing returns followed in 1986 and 1988, while a spinoff TV series Poltergeist: The Legacy previously ran for four seasons between 1996 and 1999. A lacklustre reboot also vanished without a trace in 2016.
