He was born in New Zealand to a Fijian-Chinese father and Tongan mother and has represented both Fiji and Tonga at rugby league. But could Sydney Roosters forward Siua Wong end up as a Wallaby?
Having played the 15-man game at Scots College, Wong has acknowledged that he could follow ex-teammates and current rap partners Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Joey Manu into rugby when his Roosters contract expires in two years time.
Zero Tackle reports that Wong, 21, was “hunted” by Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby as a potential All Black at the end of 2023 before signing a contract extension with the Roosters.
“There’s always thoughts, but at the moment my full commitment (is to) the Roosters,” Wong told Zero Tackle.
“I think that was one of the main reasons I moved over to Scots because they put me into that school and I’ve loved this club and everything that its about.
“I’m keen to see what the future holds, but at the moment, I’ve just been focused on my (rugby league) career.”
Wong was the Roosters’ Rising Star and NSW Cup Player of the Year in 2023 and he bust some decent moves off the park too, teaming up with Suaalii, Manu and Bulldogs-bound Sitili Tupouniua to record a rap track.
It was reported that the NSW Waratahs offered Wong a contract in 2021 before he signed a three-year contract with the Roosters.
He acknowledged his eclectic background in an interview with Nine last year.
“I’m Tongan, Samoan, Fijian and Chinese. So I was born in Auckland, Middlemore,” Wong said.
“So on my dad’s side, my grandma’s Tongan and my grandpa’s Fijian-Chinese.
“Then on the other side of my mum’s family, her mum’s full Tongan and her dad’s full Samoan. It was a bit hard growing up just because I was never full in any of them. I was kind of a little bit of each of them.
“So I always found it a little bit hard to kind of fit in. But through rugby league, I’ve been able to play in two international teams.
“I’m able to learn more about my culture through the Fijian campaign and even just the Tongan Series last year in England. Just through those camps and stuff like that, I’m able to learn more about my culture.
“Everyone in the NRL has their own identity and where they’ve come from. They’ve all come from different walks of life.”
