Want to see what all the hype is around Severance before Season 2? Apple TV+ is so confident that you will be hooked that they are streaming Season 1 on a different platform for free ahead of next season’s debut. Not only that, but viewers can get three months free to watch the rest of Apple TV+’s incredible library. The plan appears to be to get audiences hooked on their programming, assuming they will stay subscribed after their trial period because they won’t want to miss out on more great series.
The entire first season of Severance will be available to stream for free on Roku until Jan. 19, 2025, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is part of AppleTV’s plans to attract new subscribers to their service, timed perfectly with the premiere of Severance Season 2, which will debut on Jan. 17, 2025. Fans will be able to watch Severance from the Roku home page, and Roku TV users will be eligible for three months free of AppleTV+. Regarding the collaboration, Sweta Patel, VP of growth marketing & merchandising for Roku, said:
“Partnering with Apple ahead of the highly anticipated Severance season 2 and being able to create an exclusive fan experience that is available to millions of U.S. households including offering Apple TV+ content outside of the Apple ecosystem, on the Roku Channel for the first time ever is incredibly exciting for us. Part of the magic of the Roku platform is that we can work with our brand partners to create bespoke experiences that our viewers love and achieve our partner’s goals.”
This is the second major initiative AppleTV+ has done so far to get their titles in front of audiences at the start of the year. The first weekend of 2025 saw Apple TV+ make itself available to everyone for free. It was an unprecedented move but designed to get the streaming service’s critically acclaimed but often overlooked shows in the eyes of the public. It seemed perfectly timed as the critically acclaimed Shrinking Season 2 concluded one week prior, and the anticipation for Severance‘s upcoming Season 2 premiere is high.
AppleTV+ Knows You Will Love ‘Severance’
Apple TV+ has earned a reputation as one of the best streaming services due to the quality of its programming. With a wide array of shows, like the beloved Ted Lasso, original flagship series The Morning Show, and the fan-favorite MonsterVerse spin-off series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, alongside critically acclaimed films like Killers of the Flower Moon, Apple TV+ has something for everyone that, on average, is better than what Netflix has to offer. Yet it hasn’t had the same reach as Netflix, despite Apple products being so popular. Apple TV’s attempts to break into the blockbuster film scene have largely been a misfire, and they are beginning to roll back their plans for big-budget theatrical releases.

Severance Creator Reveals How Many More Seasons Are ‘Mapped Out’
With the second season of Apple TV+’s sci-fi workplace drama still in the works, show creators are already teasing a mapped-out future for Severance.
Making Severance free on Roku is a bold move, but one that could pay off. Many series, like Paramount+’s School Spirits or The CW’s Riverdale, exploded in popularity following their debut on Netflix. While Roku might not have the same reach that Netflix does, the brand has 90 million users, which Apple TV+ hopes to capitalize on. After a nearly three-year gap between Severance‘s first and second seasons, this can help build momentum and grow the audience for a series many people might have forgotten about or never even heard of.
