Global health authorities are on alert, as two viruses spread in the community.
Australians have been urged to be aware of symptoms of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, following a recent increase in infection.
The World Health Organisation on Wednesday declared mpox a global public health emergency, as a new strain in Africa continues to spread.

Clade Ib, the version of the virus behind the current outbreak, is believed to cause a more serious type of mpox than the version that caused a public health emergency in 2022.
A case linked to the outbreak in Africa has since been reported in Sweden, the first sign of its spread outside the continent.
Australian, US and Canadian officials have said they have not identified any cases of the strain so far.
While the new strain has not yet reached Australian shores, authorities are asking people to know the warning signs.
Detections of mpox in NSW have increased from one before June 1 to 93 after, according to NSW Health.
Since 2022, there has been a global outbreak of the virus, with over 97,000 reported cases in many countries outside Africa, including Australia.
The mpox virus is spread by close contact.
It is related to smallpox and causes skin lesions, fever and muscular aches.
NSW Health executive director of Health Protection Dr Jeremy McAnulty said there had been over 15,000 cases of mpox reported in Central Africa this year, many of which were due to the new strain.
“With the recent increase in cases, NSW Health is asking people who may be at risk of mpox to stay on the lookout for symptoms,” McAnulty said.
“Mpox spreads through close skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact, and often starts with small pimple-like skin lesions particularly in areas that are hard to see such as the genitals, anus or buttock.
“People who have any symptoms of mpox, even if they have had the mpox vaccine and even if mild, should immediately contact their GP or sexual health service for an appointment.”
Travellers warned
Another warning was issued to travellers this week over a potentially deadly virus detected in the Europe for the first time.
Nineteen cases of the insect-borne Oropouche virus were detected in Spain, Italy and Germany in June and July, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
Eighteen of these had recently travelled to Cuba and one to Brazil.
Outbreaks have been reported in several countries across South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The virus is transmitted to humans through a species of midge that is not present in Europe.
“To date, there has been a lack of evidence as to whether European midges or mosquitoes could transmit the virus,” the ECDPC said.
Direct, human-to-human transmission of the virus has not been documented so far, the ECDPC said.
However, Brazil recently reported six possible cases of pregnant woman passing the virus their children during pregnancy.
With no vaccines to prevent the disease or specific medication to treat it, travellers visiting South America were advised to avoid insect bites.
Experts said most patients make recover well and fatal outcomes are rare.
Symptoms are similar to the flu, causing an abrupt headache, fever, nausea, muscle and joint pains.
