Batman Returns to 1995 With Awesome Retro Action Figures

Hindsight is everything, especially when talking about a film like Batman Forever. However, when the Joel Schumacher film was first released in 1995, there wasn’t much retrospective knowledge or expectations for what would soon be one of the most infamous films in the live-action Batman filmography. So, it’s hard to blame anyone who was excited about the film, especially following the acclaimed movie that is Batman Returns. While plenty of people are dismissive of the film now, many grew up with it and were highly excited about the movie at the time. Thankfully, for both those fans and those who have a newfound admiration for Batman Forever, there is now a new opportunity to collect recreations of vintage memorabilia for the film.

Action figures have always played a big part in promoting and marketing Batman films, especially the earlier films of Burton and Schumacher. Now, revealed in an exclusive report from ScreenRant, Spin Master’s reproductions of classic Batman Forever action figures will be available to purchase at Target. Characters from the film, such as Batman, Robin, Two-Face, and the Riddler, will all be available to collect, with each figure costing $9. The Batmobile set, which also includes a Batman figure, will also be available for purchase.

While Batman Forever isn’t as fondly remembered as other live-action films, it should still be remembered for its incredibly colorful visuals and hilariously over-the-top characterizations. These new action figures perfectly represent the film’s tone and help cement its place in the Batman mythos as an unconventional and memorable entry.

‘Batman Forever’s Larger Appeal Towards Children Is Where It Succeeded

The release of these figures is in accordance with the 30th anniversary of Batman Forever. It’s commendable that Warner Bros. and Spin Master recognize the film’s merits despite the very vocal comments about its absurdity on social media and the poor critical reviews it received. In an interview with ScreenRant in the same exclusive report, Spin Master’s Vice President of Marketing, Mark Morse, acknowledged the poor reception the film received but also said that “it was extremely successful and immensely popular with younger kids, which is why I think the toys developed for the film continue to have such strong appeal.”

Chris O’Donnell starred as the loyal sidekick to Gotham City’s caped crusader in two big screen flicks, but he was almost played by someone else.

While Joel Schumacher’s first Batman film isn’t as dark or grounded as what different directors would do with the character, it is nonetheless an interesting way to adapt the Caped Crusader. Moreover, it must have been a jarring transition for audiences to go straight from Tim Burton’s gothic representation of the character to Schumacher’s more colorful rendition. Whatever the case, the film was a box office success despite the poor reviews, grossing $336 million against a $100 million budget.

For fans of vintage reproductions of classic figures for movies and television, there are more plans from Spin Master to do the same for other movies, as Morse would say: “While the Batman Forever wave leans a bit more toward a remake or reimagining of the original line, future waves will bring movies and characters to life that fans haven’t seen before. I think they will be very excited for what we have in store for them.” We can only hope that the love for Batman Forever continues and convinces Warner Bros. to open the vault and finally release the Schumacher Cut.
