Academy Award nominee and Ghostbusters star Melissa McCarthy has responded to one fan’s idea for a sequel to her 2015 action-comedy Spy, which also starred The Beekeeper’s Jason Statham as a pair of unorthodox secret agents trying to save the world. The idea for Spy 2 comes courtesy of X/Twitter user @AshDylanLit, and would find McCarthy’s Susan Cooper and Statham’s Rick Ford going undercover as break dancing Olympians.
Frankly, the sequel idea is perfect, and McCarthy has now responded to the short pitch, which reads, “Need a SPY 2 where Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham go undercover as Olympics breakdancers from a made-up country,” via Instagram, simply declaring, “Ummm YES PLEASE!!!!”
The idea for a Spy sequel set during the Olympics, and specifically finding Cooper and Ford partaking in some break dancing, comes following a…questionable performance from Australia’s first Olympic breaker ‘Raygun.’ Her routine has since gone viral, with many no doubt how McCarthy and The Stath could make the situation even funnier.
Written and directed by Paul Feig, Spy stars Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, and Bobby Cannavale, and follows a CIA analyst who has spent her entire career as a desk jockey suddenly being thrown into the field and going undercover to capture an arms dealer and avenge the death of the organization’s best agent. Spy remains one of Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, and Paul Feig’s highest rated movies, with the action-comedy outing standing at a hugely impressive 95% rating from critics and a 78% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
No doubt Melissa McCarthy is far from the only one who would now love to see Susan Cooper and Rick Ford return for an Olympics-based mission.
Are There Any Plans for Spy 2?
While details of any actual plans for Spy 2 remain unknown at present, director Paul Feig has previously teased his plans for a follow-up, revealing to Empire back in 2016 that Jason Statham would be front-and-center alongside Melissa McCarthy.
“That’s another world that I don’t want to walk away from. It’s the first thing I did that I set up to be a possible franchise and Melissa is dying to do it. I have a story for it, and a funny idea that will kick it off that involves Statham.
Susan Cooper is one of my favourite characters I’ve ever come up with, but Rick Ford is possibly the one I’ll take to the grave with me. Will he get any more self-aware in the sequel? No, god no. He’ll get less self-aware.”
