Bringing a new “Daredevil” series to the MCU has been fraught with drama. There’s been so many issues, it’s difficult to keep up. According to reports, the show started filming and while it was about to wrap up, Marvel decided to switch gears. The studio brought in a new showrunner (Dario Scardapane) and changed directors (Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are the main filmmakers). And now, months later, we are on the verge of “Daredevil: Born Again” being released on Disney+.

In a new interview with EW, showrunner Dario Scardapane and star Charlie Cox talked about the changes the show has had, and how instrumental the cast was in making sure the series retains what made it work on Netflix years ago.
Scardapane talked about what the original version of “Daredevil: Born Again” looked like, and what has changed since.

“It had been conceived as more of a legal procedural, and we really brought it back towards an action-based New York crime story,” Scardapane said. “The real trick was to have the DNA of the old Netflix show, but then push it forward into something very new.”
For those unaware, “Daredevil” was originally a three-season series on Netflix. The show wasn’t attached to the MCU and kinda existed in its own space. Eventually, Netflix lost the rights and Marvel Studios decided to reboot the show in the MCU. However, the stuff that was being filmed just wasn’t working. That led the stars of the show, along with folks from the studio, to suggest that it should actually retain a lot of what made the original series so beloved. That meant bringing back the original supporting cast, and making huge changes to the story. Instead of running away from the original series, now ‘Born Again’ was full-on embracing it.
As Cox explained, it’s all about keeping true to what worked with the original series and not trying to dumb it down for a new audience.

“The thing that we kept talking about was, this show has had the success that it’s had and has appealed to a very specific demographic because it’s one of the few superhero shows that is so dark and sinister at times,” Cox said. “Vincent [D’Onofrio] and I both felt like if you lose that, you are at risk of losing the identity of our show. So we really pushed for the show to remain geared towards an older audience and not dumbed down to kind of capture a wider net of people. I think in some ways it’s even darker than a lot of the stuff we’ve done in the past.”
Now, with all that retooling in the past, “Daredevil: Born Again” is poised to have a big audience on Disney+. The series is expected to debut on March 4, 2025.
