Brackenridge Park Conservancy is raising funds to restore and care for the park by hosting the highly anticipated event: Concert in the Park featuring Christopher Cross with the San Antonio Philharmonic conducted by Maestro Peter Bay. This historic evening of music will be held at Sunken Garden Theater on Dec. 4, in celebration of the park’s 125th year.
“As a conservancy, we are here to usher in the next era for Brackenridge Park while also preserving the park’s legacy,” said Chris Maitre, CEO of Brackenridge Park Conservancy. “For 125 years, Brackenridge has been a natural, cultural and historic retreat for San Antonio. Maintaining and growing this is critical. So, it’s time to ask ourselves, what does the next 125 years look like for Brackenridge Park?”
Events like Concert in the Park help the conservancy supplement public funding to preserve and enhance the park’s resources for current and future generations. Funds raised by the conservancy also help host free events for all of San Antonio like Family Fish Day, Yoga in the Park and Parktoberfest.
The concert featuring Christopher Cross is the pinnacle fundraising event for the park’s yearlong 125th celebration. A San Antonio native, Cross is one of San Antonio’s most successful artists. He has won five Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination and five Top 10 singles. Famed for hits like “Sailing,” “Ride Like the Wind” and “Arthur’s Theme,” his career has spanned more than four decades and sold more than 10 million albums.
Joining Cross will be the San Antonio Philharmonic, which envisions a San Antonio where every resident has access to high-quality orchestral performances and educational opportunities that reflect the history and culture of our community. These musicians seek ways to involve new audiences in the transformative power of music and reinvent the orchestra of the 21st century.
The performance will be conducted by Maestro Peter Bay who has appeared with over 80 different orchestras. He became music director and conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra in 1998, is the primary conductor for the Austin Ballet, conductor of the Bravo! Big Sky Classical Festival Orchestra and Arizona Philharmonic and has conducted albums and soundtracks to include Christopher Cross’ Secret Ladder album.
The concert venue itself will be another star of the show. Sunken Garden Theater is an old quarry given new life as an event venue in 1930. Its unique, natural setting has been home to the San Antonio Opera, symphony, jazz, dance, drama and pop performances, and continues to be a beloved venue today.
Brackenridge Park Conservancy is hosting Concert in the Park on Dec. 4, the day George W. Brackenridge made the first bequest to establish Brackenridge Park 125 years ago. This will be a concert for all of San Antonio with a range of ticket prices. VIP spaces are available, contact lynn@brackenridgepark.org.
