Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters confirms Jock Madden injury

Brisbane coach Kevin Walters confirmed the embattled club will have their depth tested as they’re forced to play their fourth-string halfback next weekend.

The Broncos lost Jock Madden in Friday night’s loss to Penrith, who went down with a serious hamstring injury.

Madden joins Adam Reynolds and rookie Cody Black on the sidelines, with Walters now turning to Josh Rogers to take over the chief playmaking role.

“(Madden) will be (out) for a good month or longer,” Walters said.

“(Rogers) has got the bye this week (in Queensland Cup) so he’ll be right to go next Saturday against the Dragons.

“He was outstanding (in his last game for the Broncos) so it’s good for him, not so good for Jock but pretty good for him to get another crack at this level.”

Rogers filled in for Reynolds in Round 10 in a 30-14 victory over the Eels and has two NRL games to his name.

The Broncos could sit 12th on the ladder by the end of the round and have now lost five in a row for the first time since 2020.

Brisbane face the Dragons, Knights, Bulldogs, Titans, Cowboys, Eels, Dolphins and Storm to finish the season, and will need to win six of those matches to make it in the finals.

“The record at the Broncos (for consecutive losses) is eight or nine. We don’t want to break that record,” he said.

“It’s about sticking together and working hard at training.

“We have an Origin game to get through as well.

“Once we get the full crew back together we will set sail for the rest of the season.”
