Canada’s Leylah Fernandez upsets Elena Rybakina, advances at Cincinnati Open

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez is through to the third round of the Cincinnati Open after upsetting Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina on Thursday.

Fernandez rallied to beat the fourth-seeded Rybakina 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.

Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, fired 20 aces but also committed 17 double faults. Fernandez had five aces with 13 double faults.

Fernandez will take on Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the next round after she beat Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets.

The 21-year-old from Laval, Que., also bounced back to beat China’s Yue Yuan 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 during her opening-round match Wednesday.

Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime plays seventh-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway in the second round of men’s action on Thursday evening.
