Canadian junior team holding Cowan out of selection camp

The Canadian junior hockey team is playing it safe with Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan.

Hockey Canada announced Monday that the London Knights star will attend, but not participate in selection camp this week in Ottawa for precautionary reasons after he exited a game with an injury on Friday night.

An open-ice hit from Oshawa Generals defenceman Zack Sandhu in the second period sent both players to their respective dressing rooms.

Knights GM Mark Hunter told the London Free Press after the game that Cowan was “feeling pretty good” after the game and that he didn’t expect the injury to keep him out of Canadian junior selection camp next week in Ottawa.

Cowan has recorded a point in 56 consecutive regular-season games dating back to last year, an unofficial OHL record.

With one spot to fill, the Canadian junior team has invited Generals forward Beckett Sennecke.

The third-overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks, Sennecke has 21 goals and 23 assists for 44 points in 26 games with Oshawa this season.

Before going pointless Sunday, Sennecke had 14 points in his previous three games.
