“What in the hell is going on?!” Drafthouse Film has unveiled a new trailer for a 4K re-release of cult classic The Birthday, directed by Spanish filmmaker Eugenio Mira, described as “mischievously thrilling, darkly hilarious.” The Birthday first premiered at the 2004 Sitges Film Festival, meaning the film is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its original debut next month, though it never got an actual US release. Drafthouse will host screenings of the 4K version this fall. Their intro: Not everything is as it seems at the old Royal Fulton Hotel. Norman Forrester, played brilliantly in a career-defining performance by Corey Feldman, is finally going to meet his girlfriend’s family at her father’s lavish birthday party. But what was supposed to be an important step forward in their relationship doesn’t exactly go as planned; he’s not on the guest list, his girlfriend is ignoring him, and her father doesn’t like him at all. Rejected and heartbroken, Norman wanders away from the party, only to find something far more sinister than his girlfriend’s family lurking within the churning bowels of the ailing hotel: an ancient evil that threatens to bring about the end of the world. Whoa.

Norman Forrester, played by the iconic Corey Feldman in a career-defining performance, is finally going to meet his girlfriend’s family at her father’s birthday party. But a night of promise leads to disaster when Norman uncovers an ancient evil that might bring about the end of the world. Hailed “a cinematic marvel” by master of comedy and terror Jordan Peele. The Birthday is directed by Spanish composer / filmmaker Eugenio Mira, who first made his feature directorial debut with this film in 2004 before going on to direct Agnosia (2010) and Grand Piano (2013) later. The screenplay is by Mikel Alvariño and Eugenio Mira. It’s executive produced by Ibon Cormenzana and Corey Feldman. This originally premiered at the 2004 Sitges Film Festival in Spain but it never officially opened in the US. Drafthouse Films will finally debut Mira’s The Birthday film in select US theaters (at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas) on October 11th, 2024. Who’s down?
