Creature Commandos Cast & DC Character Guide

Creature Commandos is set to kick off James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe with an animated series that includes some of DC’s strangest characters. Gunn revealed in January 2023 that he had begun writing a new TV series for his revamped DCU, confirmed to be Creature Commandos on January 31, 2023, when Gunn revealed part of the slate for the DC Universe’s Chapter 1, titled “Gods and Monsters”. The seven-episode series will mark the first project in the new DCU, and is currently scheduled for release in 2024, with the DCU Superman movie releasing the year after.

Creature Commandos will adapt several characters from the comics that haven’t been seen or mentioned in previous live-action projects. Creature Commandos won’t be live-action either, but Gunn confirmed that the new DC Universe would share continuity between feature films, TV shows, and numerous animated series, so there’s an opportunity for these obscure characters to crossover into live-action in upcoming DC releases. The team shares similarities with DC’s Suicide Squad, as a group of monsters will be brought together to form a special black ops unit, also under the watchful eye of Amanda Waller herself.

10 Viola Davis as Amanda Waller

Actor: Viola Davis has been active since 1988, working on a number of TV shows and movies, but her real breakthrough came in the 2008 film Doubt, winning an Academy Award for her role. In 2014, she starred in the television series How to Get Away With Murder, which ran for six seasons and landed her an Emmy win in 2015. She has been nominated for four Academy Awards, with the most recent being Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2020.

Character: Davis debuted as Amanda Waller in David Ayers’ Suicide Squad, and reprized the role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and the HBO Max series Peacemaker. As well as appearing in animation as the founder of the Creature Commandos, Amanda Waller is also set to receive her own solo series, Waller, which will continue the storyline of Peacemaker season 1. Amanda Waller is frequently shown to use various groups of prisoners on incredibly dangerous – and off-the-books – missions.

9 Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

Actor: Frank Grillo has had a long-running career in both television and film, first appearing in the 1992 film The Mambo Kings. With his martial arts background, Grillo is commonly cast in films and TV that require a lot of physicality, including The Purge franchise, Zero Dark Thirty, Minority Report, and many others. Before being in the DCU, he appeared as a minor villain in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.

Character: Grillo will be playing Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, the father to Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag from The Suicide Squad, and a member of the original Suicide Squad in DC Comics. Rick Flag died in The Suicide Squad, which should be a driving force for Rick Flag Sr. in the DCU. He is set to headline the series as the leader of the team, and will also continue his role as the character in Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

8 Anya Chalotra as Circe

Actor: Chalotra’s most famous performance is in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher – where she played the role of Yennifer – but also has notable voice acting experience, having played the lead role in the Sherwood Youtube Originals series. She also appeared as Sif in Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: Circe is an especially exciting addition to the show’s roster, as she’s popularly theorized to be the main villain of the story, which would give the team a powerful enemy to go up against. The official trailer for Creature Commandos appears to confirm this, as she seems to be an antagonist for them to overcome. Circe is best known as a member of Wonder Woman’s villain roster.

7 Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein

Actor: Indira Varma has been active for multiple decades, but her prominent breakout role came in 2005 when she played Niobe Vorena in HBO’s Rome. She portrayed Ellaria Sand, wife of Pedro Pascal’s Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, having a significant influence on the narrative later on. One of her more recent roles was as Tala Durith in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: Indira Varma will be voicing the Bride of Frankenstein in Creature Commandos, adapted from the Bride in DC Comics, a prominent member of the team. In the comics, the Bride works for the counter-terrorism organization SHADE, and has had a tumultuous relationship with Frankenstein himself. In the trailer, it seems like the Bride is positioned to be one of the prominent players in the series.

6 Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky

Actor: Zoë Chao, best known for her roles as Zoë Zhu in The Afterparty, Isobel in Strangers, and Lucy Dang in Party Down, is set to voice Nina Mazursky. Chao has been an actor for the better part of a decade, with one of her most recent roles being in Nightbitch, which is set to be released in 2024.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: Mermaid scientist Nina Mazursky transformed herself into an amphibian while carrying out experiments for SHADE, attempting to create a new generation of Creature Commandos. While she couldn’t initially breathe on land without the use of her helmet, she was eventually given the ability to survive without it both in and out of the water. Even though this is her comic origin, it is unclear how much will be translated into the series.

5 David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein

Actor: David Harbour is perhaps best known for his role as Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, but has been working as an actor in TV and film for three decades. He is also no stranger to comic book movie universes, having roles in Suicide Squad, Black Widow and the upcoming film, Thunderbolts*. He has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards and even a Tony award.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: After killing his creators in DC Comics, Frankenstein ran away and joined SHADE, eventually becoming a member of the Creature Commandos, and even acting as the team’s leader for a time. He will be named Eric for Creature Commandos. Frankenstein and the Bride have a romantic history together, which could possibly be explored in the series.

4 Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus

Actor: Alan Tudyk has been a prominent character actor for nearly three decades with roles in films like A Knight’s Tale, and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Tudyk’s other works include 28 Days, I, Robot, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Firefly, among many others, so he is a brilliant addition to the cast of Creature Commandos. He is also a seasoned voice actor.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: In Creature Commandos, Alan Tudyk will be taking on the role of Doctor Phosphorus, a Batman villain who gained his powers after being exposed to high levels of nuclear radiation. In the official trailer, Doctor Phosphorus looks to be quite powerful, and has no qualms about killing people.

3 Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic

Actor: Maria Bakalova is a pretty new actor, having her first big breakout in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Bakalova has previously worked with Gunn in the MCU’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, in which she voices newcomer Cosmo the Spacedog.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: Princess Ilana Rostovic is an original character created for DC’s Creature Commandos. Not much is known about the character, but the official trailer shows Circe trying to kill her for a reason that is yet to be revealed. It looks like the Creature Commandos will have to help her out in some way during the events of the series.

2 Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot & Weasel

Actor: Sean Gunn has had a prominent acting career, but his breakthrough has to be Gilmore Girls, where he portrayed series regular, Kirk Gleason. He has worked with his brother, James Gunn, on a variety of projects, including portraying Kraglin in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and performing as both Calendar Man and Weasel in The Suicide Squad.

Notable Movies and TV Shows:

Character: Sean Gunn will reprise his role as Weasel for the series, allowing viewers to get more backstory for the strange creature. The series will see Sean Gunn perform another dual role, as he will also voice G.I. Robot, one of a series of robotic soldiers created to fight during World War II, who eventually went on to become a member of the Creature Commandos in DC Comics.

1 Steve Agee as John Economos

Actor: Steve Agee has been in a variety of TV shows and movies over the years, both in front of the camera and as a voice actor. Still, he had a recurring role in New Girl as Outside Dave, and Superstore. He has also voiced various characters in Adventure Time. Agee is a long-time friend of and collaborator with James Gunn, appearing in a number of his projects, including The Suicide Squad.

Character: Though it was initially suspected that Creature Commandos would be set in the past, Steve Agee’s return as John Economos confirms that the series will in fact be set in the present day of the DC Universe. Agee debuted as Economos in The Suicide Squad, before reprising the role in Peacemaker where he helps take down the butterflies as part of the team known as the 11th Street Kids. His casting in Creature Commandos essentially confirms that this version of the team will be working for ARGUS and Amanda Waller.
