Dark Sky Films Takes U.S. Rights to Crime Thriller ‘The G’

The Playmaker has closed a U.S. distribution deal for Canadian crime thriller “The G” with Dark Sky Films. Directed by Karl R. Hearne, the film follows Ann Hunter, a.k.a. The G, who battles a corrupt eldercare system.

“The G” will be represented by the Playmaker at next week’s American Film Market.

Inspired by real events, “The G” is a dark, suspenseful drama blending crime and human emotion, driven by a standout performance from Dale Dickey, who was awarded best actress at the Bari Film Festival and Festival Fantasmagoria. The film also received a special jury mention for best director at Fantasia Film Festival and won best screenplay award for Hearne at Festival Fantasmagoria.

“The G” has played at Tallinn Black Nights, Glasgow Film Festival, Fantasia Film Festival, Fantaspoa and Reims Polar Film Festival.

This is Hearne’s second feature after “Touched” (2019), which was nominated for best first feature at the Canadian Screen Awards.

Ann Hunter, a.k.a. The G, and her husband retire to a quiet suburb, but their peaceful life is shattered when a corrupt legal guardian seizes their assets, confining them to a brutal “eldercare facility.” Victims of an exploitative system, Ann teams up with her loyal granddaughter to fight for freedom and seek revenge. Inspired by real events, “The G” is a chilling winter-noir blending suspense, dark humor, and emotion, driven by a riveting portrayal of resilience and defiance from Dickey in a rare, powerful leading role.

“Over the years, Dark Sky has positioned itself as an established distributor in the genre sector on the U.S. market. We are therefore very pleased that the esteemed Dark Sky team will now be devoting itself to our thriller ‘The G’ and bringing it to U.S. cinemas,” Moritz Heminnger, head of sales and acquisitions, said.

The film is produced by 3Buck Productions.
