David Fincher Circling New Squid Game Series At Netflix As Next Project

David Fincher’s getting back in the game with Netflix! Or, to be more specific, the Squid Game. That’s right, folks — having worked on Mindhunter, Mank, The Killer, and Love, Death & Robots at the streamer already, word on the street (well, over at Deadline, actually) is that the American auteur has his sights set on giving the platform’s wildly popular satirical K-Drama the English-language remake treatment.

According to Deadline‘s ‘The Dish’ column, the long-rumoured US redux of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s show is actively in the works at the streamer, and Fincher is gearing up to be the one to develop it. If the series does come to fruition, it’d be the first scripted project to spin off from the original Korean-language play-or-die thriller, which is itself set to continue with a second season dropping on Boxing Day this year before a third and final instalment lands sometime in 2025. Earlier rumours had positioned Fincher as potential helmsman for an English-language movie set in the Squid Game universe, but this latest update — which comes with no further details beyond the unsurprising expectation that this new adaptation would be set in America — looks to have ironed out a half-truth into something a little more concrete that we can get hyped for.

Given Fincher’s past experience helming a ‘Game’ titled project involving an ordinary protagonist who finds themself lured into an extraordinary, pretty wretched game (that’d be 1997 Michael Douglas starring classic The Game, just to clarify), the man certainly knows the assignment coming aboard this one. And whilst we continue to mourn the indefinite hiatus of Mindhunter, the prospect of another series-length thriller from one of the genre’s all-time greats is enough to have us all kinds of excited to see the Pink Men’s arrival stateside — especially given just how dystopian things seem to be getting right about now. Let the (squid) games begin!
