To say the recent remake of “The Crow” is a box office disappointment is an understatement. In its debut weekend, the film earned an abysmal $4.6 million. When you take into consideration the reported budget of the film is $50 million, you can understand just how bad things are. But not everyone is saddened by this news. In fact, one person is loving every second of it—Alex Proyas.
Over the past several days, director Alex Proyas has reveled in the news that the ‘Crow’ remake is DOA. But why does he care? Well, he’s the director of the original film, and he’s not shied away from letting people know that not only is the remake not necessary, but it’s actually disrespectful.

His hatred of the remake stems from the fact that he believes the original film he made is not only a superior movie, but it also is a celebration of the life of Brandon Lee, who tragically was killed on set. Proyas believes that if you remake the film, you’re disrespecting the memory of Lee. Your mileage may vary with how you feel about that, but Proyas has been steadfast with his stance that the remake is shitty.
So, that leads us to the recent box office bombing. Well, Proyas has been going on his Facebook profile, where he often communicates with fans, to celebrate the failure of “The Crow” remake. He posted a meme that marked him “safe from ‘The Crow’ remake.” He also wrote, “I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems.” And of course, he’s been sharing reviews of the film that are harshly negative.

Look, it’s fine that Proyas is celebrating a film bombing at the box office. That’s his prerogative. But it does suck to see a filmmaker trash the work of other filmmakers and people involved. Since he takes personal offense to the whole film existing, Proyas doesn’t see it as disrespectful. However, it’s probably best that Proyas has posted that he is taking a break from FB for the time being. There’s only so much dunking that can happen before it gets sad.
