Donald Glover Says ‘Star Wars’ Can Be “Way Too Serious” & He Wants The Lando Spinoff To Be Fun

Star Wars” is exactly what people think about when they mention escapism in films and TV. The Original Trilogy, especially, is filled with fun, whimsy, and amazing situations. But somewhere down the line, things went from a farmboy learning how to use a laser sword to political maneuvering and sons killing their fathers. It just can get really serious. And that’s something Donald Glover would like to change with his forthcoming Lando Calrissian spinoff film.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Donald Glover talked about what he plans on bringing to the “Star Wars” franchise with his planned Lando film. Number one, it appears the actor wants to make sure everyone is having fun watching the film because over the years “Star Wars” has gotten “super serious.”

“I just want it to be fun,” Glover said. “As a ‘Star Wars’ fan myself, I think it’s important that there needs to be fun being had.”

He added, “‘Star Wars’—I love it—but sometimes, it can be super serious. Sometimes it’s way too serious. Everything that has to do with the Skywalkers is so serious. [With] Lando, I think the best part about him is he’s a scoundrel. And I feel like people can relate to that, and he’s probably like ‘Man, this war is whack. I need money,’ which I feel everyone can relate to. I want to bring fun to ‘Star Wars.’ I just want it to be fun.”

You can see the vibe Glover brings to Lando with his brief appearance in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” While he doesn’t get a chance to fully take over the film, Glover’s Lando is definitely having fun and is one of the more entertaining aspects of that film.

We still don’t know when we might see Glover’s Lando spinoff film come to fruition. He’s been working on it for a while now, and it doesn’t seem to be in the works for anytime soon. That said, if Glover really does want to bring some fun to the franchise, Lucasfilm would benefit from making sure it happens sooner than later.
