Don’t Worry, Sweet Home Season 3 Fixed Your Biggest Song Kang Hyun-su Complaint

WARNING: This article contains minor SPOILERS for Sweet Home season 3.

Summary

  • Sweet Home season 3 focuses on Cha Hyun-su, fixing the lack of his presence in season 2.
  • The evil alter of Hyun-su takes the spotlight in season 3, adding depth to the character.
  • New characters and original storylines were introduced in season 2, but season 3 returns focus to the remaining Green Home residents.

Sweet Home season 3 fortunately fixed season 2’s Hyun-su mistake and gave Song Kang’s character the attention he deserves. Six months after the release of the second season, Sweet Home returned for its final chapter. The Song Kang K-drama debuted in 2020 and became a massive hit for Netflix, securing a two-season renewal shortly after. With Sweet Home season 4 not happening, the show had the difficult mission of wrapping everything up in eight episodes after the divisive season 2. Fortunately, many of the issues Sweet Home 2 had were fixed.

Like many K-dramas based on a webtoon, Sweet Home went past its source material and introduced original storylines. This was particularly true for season 2, of which most stories and characters were not from the Sweet Home webtoon. Sweet Home season 2 was not as well received as the first chapter, particularly because of how different the show looked after the destruction of the Green Home. However, most of the problems with Sweet Home 2 can be summarized by the lack of Cha Hyun-su, an issue that the third season has fixed.

Song Kang’s Cha Hyun-su Appears A Lot In Sweet Home Season 3

Hyun-su Plays A Much Bigger Role In Sweet Home Season 3

The biggest criticism Sweet Home season 2 faced was the lack of screen time for Song Kang’s Hyun-su, the protagonist of the show. The fact that Hyun-su barely appeared in Sweet Home 2 after three years of waiting left many disappointed and played against the reception of the season. Not only did Cha Hyun-su miss several episodes of season 2, but the show also introduced a lot of new characters and asked audiences to care about them. Fortunately, Sweet Home 3 fixed that problem in two major ways. Firstly, Song Kang appears a lot in the new season.

Cha Hyun-su spent most of the new season interacting with Eun-yu, which had not happened at all in season 2.

Secondly, Hyun-su and the other surviving characters from season 1 were the focus of Sweet Home’s final season. While the characters introduced in season 2 continued to be important in this new chapter, especially Yi-kyung’s daughter, the show shifted its focus back to the remaining Green Home residents. Cha Hyun-su spent most of the new season interacting with Eun-yu, which had not happened at all in season 2. Additionally, Lee Do-hyun’s Eun-hyeok returned in episode 4 and shared the screen with Song Kang’s Hyun-su and Go Min-si’s Eun-yu quite a lot.

Why Song Kang Barely Appeared In Sweet Home Season 2

Hyun-su Missed Almost Half Of Sweet Home Season 2

It is unclear why Song Kang appeared so little in Sweet Home season 2. It must be noted that the second and third seasons of Sweet Home were filmed back-to-back, which might have played a role in how Hyun-su’s story played out. This might also have had to do with the actor’s schedule, especially considering that 16 episodes were filmed ahead of the release of season 2. Song Kang is one of the most popular and busy Korean actors right now, with Sweet Home being his longest-running role by far.

Hyun-su’s absence in season 2 could have had to do with the necessities of the story. Sweet Home needed to introduce new characters that would become important in the final season, whereas Cha Hyun-su was already a fan favorite. Song Kang’s character was defeated after fighting Sang-won in episode 3 and only returned at the end of episode 6 after spending a year watching over his friends from the shadows. Whether this approach worked is open to debate, but fortunately, Hyun-su had a lot of screen time in Sweet Home season 3.

What Happens To Hyun-su In Sweet Home Season 3

The Monster Version Of Cha Hyun-su Gets The Spotlight

Although Cha Hyun-su appeared in all episodes of Sweet Home season 3, the version of the character with the most screen time may not have been what viewers were expecting. The evil alter of Hyun-su, also known as “monster Hyun-su,” took over the character’s body at the end of season 2 and remained as such for most of the season. After everything that happened with Yi-kyung and her daughter, Hyun-su was in a lot of pain and sadness – this allowed his monster alter ego to take over. Hyun-su’s monster self was stronger than ever in season 3.

Whereas Hyun-su would often reclaim his body shortly after going “full monster,” this time, his monster alter would not let go of the wheel. This led Eun-yu to work a deal with evil Hyun-su: if she could make the original Hyun-su come back, the monster would never try to take over again. Hyun-su, Eun-yu, Private Park, and Hani embarked on a journey to return to the stadium after learning of Sang-won’s plans. They were later joined by Eun-hyeok, whose return also improved Sweet Home season 3 compared to the second chapter of the series.
