The quality of the doctors in Scrubs varies a great ideal, with some of the physicians at Sacred Heart Hospital falling short of matching the abilities of their colleagues. Some Scrubs doctors are naturally talented, whereas others find themselves endlessly studying to try and keep up – but succeeding in doing so. The main cast remains largely the same throughout all 9 seasons of Scrubs, but the skill of some of the later additions, like Doctor Denise Mahoney, is difficult to judge due to their briefer roles in the sitcom.

Similarly, some of the show’s doctors appear only for short moments, drop a one-liner, and then disappear for episodes at a time. Carla isn’t a doctor, but it seems unfair not to at least acknowledge how good she is at her job. As a nurse at Sacred Heart, Judy Reyes’ character is instrumental when it comes to the day-to-day goings-on at her place of work. If it weren’t for her ongoing and reliable presence, plus the fact that she’s endlessly putting out little fires everywhere, many of the hospital’s patients wouldn’t get the care they deserve from their physicians.

In another universe, she would likely have made an incredible doctor, but not having her leading the hospital’s nursing staff would also be a huge loss.

Her innate ability and in-depth knowledge of what’s required of her are made even more effective by the fact that she’s one of Sacred Heart’s longest-tenured employees. She may lack some of the specialist knowledge boasted by some of her colleagues, but she’s never confused by scenarios in which she’s involved. In another universe, she would likely have made an incredible doctor, but not having her leading the hospital’s nursing staff would also be a huge loss.

7 Doctor Doug Murphy

Played by: Johnny Kastl

Doug is a very unusual case when it comes to how skilled he is. While he eventually transitions into a well-suited role as a pathologist, there’s a macabre explanation for why he’s so good when working in the morgue. In short, Doug has made so many mistakes that resulted in the death of his patients that there’s almost no cause of death he hasn’t witnessed or caused firsthand. So, at least his many errors prepared him for his eventual position.

” by Doctor Cox, a moniker that eventually becomes less accurate.

While he was clearly not destined for a career treating living patients, his endless and obvious failures set him up perfectly for his unexpected job switch. Doug uses each death he contributed towards as a data point, drawing on his large pool of mistakes when carrying out his later duties. That being said, it took a severe lack of medical skill for him to end up where he eventually thrived.

6 Doctor Robert “Bob” Kelso

Played by: Ken Jenkins

As Sacred Heart’s chief of medicine, Doctor Kelso is required to stay up-to-date on every new development and regulation change in his field. There’s no doubt that he’s incredibly knowledgeable and that he had a very successful career as a practicing physician in his younger years. However, his days of applying that knowledge by interacting directly with patients regularly are long gone. Therefore, his skills as a doctor have dulled a little.

Kelso does treat patients in a few episodes of Scrubs, but his lack of recent experience is often on display, as he’s a little rusty. That being said, he does often do a good job, but his duties as the hospital’s leader are just too time-consuming for him to treat patients all too often. Luckily, he knows the strengths and weaknesses of all his staff and is rarely required to leave his office as a result.

5 Doctor John “JD” Dorian

Played by: Zach Braff

Although he spends a great deal of time goofing off with his best friend, Zach Braff’s Scrubs character knows exactly when to switch into professional mode and provide his patients with the best possible care. He’s a natural when it comes to practicing medicine, but he’s also aware that operating solely on instinct isn’t necessarily the safest way to ensure those for whom he is responsible are given the best possible chance at recovery. As such, he’ll always address the appropriate material when he’s unsure.

JD also isn’t afraid to ask for help on the rare occasion he’s stumped by a diagnosis or how to treat a rarely-seen condition. While he’s often capable of arriving at the correct conclusion in his own time, he doesn’t let his ego get the better of him. So, while his skill as a doctor is high, he also boasts an impressive propensity for teamwork. The latter isn’t a trait uniquely useful to medicine, but it’s important nonetheless.

4 Doctor Christopher Turk

Played by: Donald Faison

While Sacred Heart has a strong “doctors vs surgeons” dynamic going on, Turk’s status as a surgeon doesn’t stop him from also bearing the title of being a doctor. He’s one of the best surgeons at the hospital, as proven by the fact he eventually goes on to become chief of surgery in the divisive Scrubs season 9. Turk’s confidence could be interpreted as overkill and perhaps an overcompensation for mediocre skills, but that simply isn’t the case – he just knows how good he is.

As a surgeon, Turk has to demonstrate his talents differently to other Scrubs characters like JD or Elliot, as he makes a living by taking more direct action via surgical intervention. As excitable and chipper as he may seem about performing complex and often risky operations, it all proves that he doesn’t let the pressure of big situations get to him. He’s committed to his craft, and the results can be witnessed in his success rate.

3 Doctor Todd Quinlan

Played by: Rob Maschio

Behind all the bravado, immaturity, and workplace inappropriateness, the Todd is proven to be the hospital’s most talented surgeon in Scrubs season 1, episode 23, “My Hero.” Doctor Wenn’s appraisal of Todd’s immense skill focuses on the fact that during surgery, he’s completely in the moment, rather than being caught up on what could go wrong. He may not be many people’s first choice to operate on them in a time of need, but surprisingly, he probably would be the best selection in almost any scenario.

In the real world, Todd’s conduct outside the operating room would probably be a lawsuit waiting to happen, but his ability to change a life for the better with a scalpel in his hand can’t be denied. It may come as a surprise, but he’s definitely in the top three doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital. No doubt it’s a shock to many for him to be rated so highly, but it’s still true.

2 Doctor Elliot Reid

Played by: Sarah Chalke

Sarah Chalke’s Scrubs character has openly admitted in the show that she knows she isn’t an instinctual doctor, and that she relies heavily on committing medical resources to memory. That being said, the results of her techniques cannot be denied, and she is an incredibly skilled and knowledgeable doctor. As the sitcom progresses, Elliot becomes gradually more comfortable when conversing with patients as well as treating them, largely managing to keep her various neuroses under wraps.

Elliot’s arc takes her from being a nervous wreck while doing her job and transforms her into a confident and levelheaded individual – at least while hard at work. She becomes the kind of doctor that many other members of the medical staff will seek out for advice or assistance with their own patients, which is a testament to how brilliant she has become in her chosen field. In fact, she would be the hospital’s best physician – if it weren’t for the continued presence of another character.

1 Doctor Percival “Perry” Cox

Played by: John C. McGinley

Doctor Cox would top many lists in various categories, so it’s no surprise that his skill also snagged him the number one spot here. He may not be the most approachable man in the world, nor the most forgiving mentor, but the fact that so many of his colleagues endlessly ask him for help is an enormous signifier of just how good of a doctor he truly is. Everyone is aware they’ll more than likely receive a string of sarcastic remarks and vitriol as a result of asking for his assistance, but it’s viewed as an ongoing price worth paying.

Cox often declares himself the best, which is a dangerous claim without the skill to back it up. Fortunately for him, his self-appraisal is more than an attempt to fortify his ego, as it’s actually correct. He doesn’t mask his true nature when he’s treating his patience. While he has a softer side that can be necessary with certain people in his care, he also isn’t afraid to speak to them with the same to-the-point tone as he does with his colleagues. In short, patients in Scrubs would be very lucky to be treated by Doctor Cox.
