Every Live-Action Disney Remake Coming After ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’

With Mufasa: The Lion King now in theaters, another live-action Disney remake is in the books. Over the years, Disney has capitalized on their beloved animated classics and brought them to life on the big screen in a whole new way. While there were a handful of them in the 1990s, they’ve really taken off in the previous decade or so. From 2014’s Maleficent and 2015’s Cinderella to 2021’s Cruella and 2023’s The Little Mermaid, there has been at least one live-action Disney remake over the past ten years, and they don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon. With three more films slated to hit theaters over the next two years, and a slew of other films in the works, Disney live-action remakes are certainly here to stay.

Given how risky it can be to finance brand-new stories, Disney has realized it’s much more cost-effective to remake what they know viewers already love. Plus, live-action remakes of their extensive animated catalog undoubtedly open the door to all kinds of new merchandise. As a result, Disney is able to profit two-fold and continue capitalizing on the same classic characters without taking big risks. While many of Disney’s newest iterations have been welcomed, there are some that have been marred in controversy and wouldn’t upset audiences if they ultimately fell to the wayside. However, such controversy hasn’t appeared to dissuade Disney in any way. As such, here is every live-action Disney remake coming to theaters following the release of Mufasa: The Lion King.

Release Date

March 21, 2025

Starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Snow White has had quite a few ups and downs throughout its development, which wrapped filming in July 2022, although reshoots were done in June 2024. Much like Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel in the remake of The Little Mermaid, Zegler’s casting as Snow White sparked anger from some fans. While plenty of people praised Disney for its color-blind casting decision, others felt the role should have been represented by someone who looked more like the character in the original 1937 animated film.

To make matters worse, Zegler’s public disapproval of the original classic only angered fans even further after she expressed the titular character needed to be “more feminist,” which the remake reportedly sets out to accomplish. However, the most egregious controversy is that of the film’s reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs, which actors like Peter Dinklage have openly criticized. Originally scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 22, 2024, Disney claims the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike forced them to delay the film’s release until March 21, 2025.

Lilo & Stitch

Arguably one of the most anticipated live-action remakes from Disney, Lilo & Stitch stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch, Sydney Agudong as Nani, and Zach Galifianakis as the voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba. One of the most beloved characters in all of Disney’s IP, Stitch is notoriously mischievous yet lovable and constantly crashing the party. True to form, the recent teaser for the film was released in the spirit of Mufasa: The Lion King and shows the playful blue alien recreating Simba’s iconic scene from The Lion King.

The upcoming remake promises to deliver the same kind of narrative the adored original animated feature is known for, which fans can’t wait to see. Filming for the movie began in May 2023 but was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It resumed in February 2024 and ultimately wrapped in March that year. Lilo & Stitch will arrive in theaters on May 23, 2025.

Moana

Cast

Dwayne Johnson
, Catherine Laga’aia
, Frankie Adams
, John Tui
, Rena Owen

While Moana 2 might have disappointed many audiences at the theater, the live-action remake of the original film has many fans extremely excited about what that will look like. Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, which should be fantastic given how well his role was received in the animated version. However, Catherine Lagaʻaia will take on the role of Moana, which Auliʻi Cravalho personally endorsed and has publicly celebrated.

Although not returning as the live-action film’s titular character, Cravalho serves as an executive producer. Filming for the movie began in July 2024 and recently wrapped in November 2024. Moana is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 10, 2026, which will coincide with the original animated movie’s 10th anniversary.
