Ex-Victoria women’s coach handed huge ban after conduct breach

Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been banned from holding any position with Cricket Australia or state or territory association for 20 years after committing a breach of CA’s code of conduct.

The breach stems from inappropriate behaviour between the ex-opening batsman and a female player.

“The conduct commission found that Samaraweera engaged in inappropriate behaviour that breached section 2.23 of CA’s code of conduct,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

“CA and CV are committed to providing a safe environment for all players and employees and the welfare of those subjected to mistreatment is paramount.”

“These are extremely serious findings that may shock and upset many in the cricket community,” Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

“The safety and wellbeing of our members remains paramount. The leaders in Australian cricket now need to ensure that every possible measure is taken to ensure things like this never happen again. We have raised this imperative with Cricket Australia.”

Samaraweera played seven Test matches and five ODIs for Sri Lanka.

Follwing his playing career Samaraweera became a coach, working with the Victoria women’s team and Melbourne Stars BBL side as an assistant before being appointed head coach of the state women’s side earlier this year.

He then resigned from the role after a disagreement with Cricket Victoria over appointing his brother, former Sri Lankan player Thilan Samaraweera, as his assistant.
