“It’s a wonderful new medium that expands the horizon of storytelling.” Apple has revealed a short trailer for a new short film thriller called Submerged, both written and directed by the award-winning filmmaker Edward Berger (who also has Conclave coming out this fall). Submerged is the first scripted film in Apple Immersive Video. Meaning it’s basically a 3D movie shot with dual lenses, though made specifically for the Apple Vision Pro VR headsets they’re selling (but no one really cares about). This is just one big marketing gimmick where they hire a famous filmmaker to make a movie for them. A WWII submarine crew combats a harrowing torpedo attack in this adrenaline-pumping thrill ride. What kind of crew? “Submerged showcases the unique storytelling capabilities that are only possible with Apple Immersive Video on Apple Vision Pro.” Will more than 20 people even be able to watch this? No cast is listed – the only name mentioned is Berger. This is all so strange, especially because there are so few details about it. Check out some 2D footage below.
Here’s the official trailer for Edward Berger’s Immersive Movie Submerged, from Apple TV’s YouTube:
Submerged–the first scripted film in Apple Immersive Video. Set during WWII, the action-adventure story brings viewers aboard a submarine as the vessel’s sailors struggle to survive a deadly torpedo attack. Submerged is written and directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Edward Berger, director of the films Strait-Jacket, Sidewalk Hotel, Smelly Dinners, Wanderbread, Gomez: Heads or Tails, Jack, All My Loving, 2022’s All Quiet on the Western Front previously, plus this year’s Conclave film, as well as the TV series “Deutschland 83” & “Patrick Melrose”. It’s produced by Apple. Filmed with the Apple Vision Pro VR headset and 3D cameras. Apple will debut Berger’s Submerged short as an Apple Immersive Video release starting on October 10th, 2024 this fall. For more info, follow Apple TV on IG @appletv. Anyone want to watch?
