The Scarlet Witch’s true nemesis has moved one step closer to the MCU five years after WandaVision ended. WandaVision was the first in a trilogy of shows centered around Wanda Maximoff and her family. The show was a precursor to Wanda’s descent into Darkhold-influenced villainy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where the Scarlet Witch ostensibly died. Questions still hang over her death, however, as her body was never seen and her arc still feels unfinished. These questions have reignited with Agatha All Along, which is the second in the trilogy that will finish with Vision’s solo series.
Agatha All Along takes place three years after the end of WandaVision, picking up with the titular witch as she breaks free of a personal hex inflicted by Wanda. Agatha All Along is filled with big reveals, including the introduction of the MCU’s Lady Death and the canonization of Mephisto. Teen’s true identity as Billy Kaplan/Maximoff, however, is perhaps the biggest reveal so far, closely following Wiccan’s comic book origins as a character with a dual identity, but the son of the Scarlet Witch nonetheless. Billy’s reintroduction into the MCU, meanwhile, makes the debut of another consequential character more likely.
Agatha All Along Hints Billy Kaplan Has Chaos Magic
Teen’s Powers Look Decidedly Familiar
Suspicions about Teen’s true identity were all but confirmed at the end of Agatha All Along episode 5 when Billy instinctively unleashes magic powerful enough to subdue three powerful witches. In addition to its evident power, Billy’s magic looks familiar as he uses powerful telekinesis and mind control similar to the Scarlet Witch’s powers throughout her MCU history. While his magic is blue rather than red, it stands to reason that he would have inherited the same brand of magic wielded by Wanda – namely, chaos magic.

Scarlet Witch Vs. Wiccan: Who Is More Powerful In Marvel Comics & In The MCU?
Billy Maximoff’s Wiccan has finally returned to the MCU, and he has already demonstrated powers similar to his mother, Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch.
This was further hinted at in Agatha All Along episode 7. When the coven mistakenly assumed that Lilia’s trial concerned reading Billy’s fortune through tarot cards, Lilia interpreted the Magician card that Billy pulled by saying “You have enormous potential and the ability to turn all of your goals into reality.” This suggests that Billy possesses particularly powerful abilities, but also hints at the reality-warping powers of the Scarlet Witch.
Scarlet Witch and Wiccan share similar powers in Marvel Comics, though it has never been explicitly stated whether Wiccan wields chaos magic.
Wanda Maximoff was able to defeat Earth-838’s Illuminati by bending reality to her will, removing Black Bolt’s mouth and shredding Mister Fantastic. The hex in WandaVision was an awesome display of what Wanda is capable of, with chaos magic being responsible for creating Billy Maximoff in the first place. If Lilia is suggesting that Billy can access the same reality-bending powers, then he may be about to carry the torch of chaos magic in the wake of his mother’s death.
Chaos Magic Is Tied To The Elder God, Chthon
Chthon Is An Elder God-Turned-Demon
In Marvel Comics, Chthon is an Elder God of Chaos whose evil ways turn him into a demon doomed to become trapped in another realm of his own making where he schemes to meddle in the affairs of Earth from afar. One of the ways he achieves this is Marvel Comics is by writing the Darkhold, from which his influence emanates. Chthon is also the reason Wanda Maximoff can use chaos magic, as he imbued her with the ability when she was born atop Mount Wundagore to ostensibly use her as a vessel through which to return when ready.
Chthon was driven from Earth through the efforts of his creator, the Demiurge – a version of which Wiccan is destined to become in Marvel Comics.
Chthon is not the creator of chaos magic, but its use acts as a direct link to him, with Wanda being used as a vessel on multiple occasions in Marvel Comics. Furthermore, every time Wanda uses chaos magic in the MCU the fabric of reality weakens, making Chthon an ever-looming threat with each use. It remains unclear how closely the MCU will follow Chthon’s comic book origins, but it remains clear that Chthon is at least MCU canon following his “appearance” in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Multiverse Of Madness Set Up Chthon As The First Demon
Chthon Authored The Darkhold
In Marvel Comics, the title of First Demon belongs to Chthon’s “brother,” Set – another Elder God who joined Chthon in murdering their fellow gods to obtain more power. The MCU appears to be taking a different route with its rendition of Chthon, with Wong referring to him as the “First demon” in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A statue of the demonic entity is also seen in Mount Wundagore, alongside the main effigy of the Scarlet Witch – and, crucially, an effigy of her son, Billy Maximoff.
Wong makes no mention of Chthon being an Elder God in
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
, ostensibly simplifying his origins.
This bolsters the theory that Chthon may be about to take hold of a new conduit in the MCU. Combined with the evidence that Wiccan can use chaos magic like his mother, the fact that Chthon’s Mount Wundagore included Scarlet Witch’s son is a telltale sign of what kind of magic Billy uses. Specifically, the kind that is directly linked to Chthon. If that is the case, then the MCU may be about to debut the First Demon somewhere in the Multiverse Saga.
Will Marvel’s Multiverse Saga Introduce Chthon At Last?
Chthon’s Influence Is Still Being Felt
WandaVisio n was the first sign that the MCU would accurately depict the origin of Wanda Maximoff’s power with its mentions of chaos magic and the debut of the MCU’s Darkhold. These two factors would give rise to speculation that Chthon would also feature down the line in the MCU. This is despite the MCU wielding ample creative license with Wanda and Pietro Maximoff’s origins being tied so closely to the Mind Stone and not being born on Wundagore Mountain.
Chthon’s relationship with chaos magic in the MCU is unclear, however. As it stands, Chthon was introduced as the creator of the Darkhold and its teachings but was not revealed to have any direct ties to the magic Wanda uses outside the Darkhold. Chthon is also responsible for prophesizing in the Darkhold that the Scarlet Witch would rule or destroy the cosmos – neither of which is yet to transpire. With all this in mind, there is plenty of unfinished business surrounding Chthon and his prophecy.
Given the nature of Wanda’s death within a castle inscribed with Chthon’s dark magic, it stands to reason that her potential resurrection may involve the demonic entity.
Agatha All Along has cast doubt on the permanence of Wanda’s death and may have debuted her successor. Given the nature of Wanda’s death within a castle inscribed with Chthon’s dark magic, it stands to reason that her potential resurrection may involve the demonic entity. Furthermore, Agatha’s relationship with the Darkhold has been a core feature of Agatha All Along in addition to demonic references. Ever since being teased in WandaVision, a live-action adaptation of the demon now looks more likely than ever.
