Foran extends for a 17th season, De Belin makes call on future, Townsend heads for Bondi on big pay cut

Foran extends for a 17th season, De Belin makes call on future, Townsend heads for Bondi on big pay cut

Gold Coast have put to bed any questions over Kieran Foran’s future, re-signing the veteran half on a one-year deal.

Days after Foran made it clear publicly he still wanted to play on beyond this year, the 33-year-old locked in his future at the Titans for next season.

The deal means Foran’s career will extend into a 17th NRL campaign, joining St George Illawarra’s Ben Hunt as the only player still left from the 2000s decade contracted for 2025.

The feat is even more remarkable when considering the time Foran spent sidelined through the middle of his career, as he battled multiple long-term injuries.

“Having been around the game for a long time, I know that we’ve got something good growing here … and I’m keen to play on into next season,” Foran said.

“My body is feeling good, and I feel like I’ve played some good football this season so far and while that’s the case, I’m keen to push on for another year.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’m really enjoying my time on the Gold Coast, so it was a simple decision for me in the end.”

Foran re-signing means the Titans will have decisions to make in their halves next year, given he has been the one constant at No.7 this season.

Des Hasler is set to make a call as soon as this week on the make up of his spine, with Keano Kini at fullback, Jayden Campbell at No.6 and AJ Brimson a chance of returning from injury.

Wallabies No.10 Carter Gordon will also be thrown into the mix from next year, where it is expected he too could be best suited to the five-eighth role.

Jack de Belin will remain at St George Illawarra in 2025, after knocking back the chance of long-term security overseas to sign a one-year deal with the Dragons.

The decision to remain in Wollongong has ended a long-running stand-off over the prop’s future.

The 33-year-old had been keen to secure a longer contract to take him to the end of his career, but the club had made clear their preference was a 12-month deal.

De Belin had attracted interest from NRL rivals – but they also were only willing to offer him one season at a time – while multiple clubs in England had tabled longer-term offers.

“He’s agreed to terms, which is great for Jack and the club,” Dragons coach Shane Flanagan said.

“It’s taken a bit of time, but we were pretty confident we were always going to get there.

“It’s a really good thing for Jack. He stays at the club, and it’s another really experienced player for us. So it’s great.”

James Tedesco has welcomed the Sydney Roosters’ signing of Chad Townsend as the club prepare to cap a bumper week in which they’ve retained back-rower Angus Crichton and got the green light to sign Mark Nawaqanitawase.

With Luke Keary to leave at the end of the 2024 campaign, North Queensland playmaker Townsend has signed for next season on a one-year deal.

It follows a busy seven days for the Bondi club, following the news Crichton has penned a two-year extension and Nawaqanitawase will join after his Olympic sevens exploits.

Townsend’s short-term deal will be a bridge between the time when Sam Walker and Sandon Smith, who Trent Robinson has backed as long-term halves prospects, are ready for the weekly pressures of the NRL.

“Having two young guys like Sam and Sandon, it’s handy to have an experienced leader like Chad,” Tedesco said.

“He’s been around the game for a long time now, he’s had success, won a grand final, he’s led different teams to success.

“That’s a win-win for all of us to have Chad’s experience here if we need him, just guiding the young halves with his experience and leadership is going to be a big positive.”

Daniel Saifiti is set to join Stefano Utoikamanu as a big-name prop on the NRL’s open market after being told by Newcastle he can look elsewhere.

Currently signed with the Knights until the end of 2026, Saifiti has confirmed he is set to become a victim of the club’s salary cap position. His potential release is likely to trigger significant interest from elsewhere, given the dearth of quality front-rowers currently available.

Saifiti is currently earning close to $750,000 a season as part of a deal signed while he was a NSW State of Origin prop in 2021. If no clubs are willing to pay that much for his services, Newcastle could be willing to contribute to his wages if he is to be granted a release.

Under NRL rules, Saifiti would be within his rights to remain at the Knights next year, and not pursue other options.

Canterbury have landed Sitili Tupouniua on a four-year deal, just hours after the previously off-contract Angus Crichton opted to stay at the Sydney Roosters for another two years.

Despite signing a three-year contract extension with the Roosters in November, the club informed Tupouniua in recent days he was free to test the market.

Tupouniua had attracted interest from Manly but AAP has been told he will instead move to the rebuilding Bulldogs under Cameron Ciraldo in a deal set to be announced in coming days.

Tupouniua’s arrival at Canterbury will allow him to play on either the edge or in the middle for the Bulldogs, in a pack that is earning its status as one of the most mobile in the NRL.

The Roosters are expected to contribute to part of the Tupouniua’s $650,000 salary, after his hefty wage had become surplus to requirements at the Roosters.

Wests Tigers have told Utoikamanu he can test the market elsewhere for next season but the club is still hopeful of convincing him to stay despite lucrative offers from St George Illawarra and Canberra.

Manly have sealed a one-year extension for hooker Gordon Chan Kum Tong while young playmaker Joey Walsh has inked a three-year deal.

Broncos winger Jordan Pereira has retired, effective immediately, due to a neck injury with the former Dragons speedster finishing with 45 NRL appearances for 14 tries, and 135 games at Cup level in Queensland and NSW scoring 79 tries.

Meanwhile, Damien Cook‘s NRL career is set to come full circle with the South Sydney hooker sealing a return to St George Illawarra.

Cook will join the Dragons in 2025 on a two-year deal after being granted a release from the final season of his deal with the Rabbitohs.

The 32-year-old’s exit will allow Souths to strengthen their roster ahead of the impending return of Wayne Bennett with the path now clear for Peter Mamouzelos to become the Bunnies’ first-choice No.9.
