After a short stint in the KHL, defenceman Tony DeAngelo is returning to North America.
DeAngelo’s contract was terminated by SKA Saint Petersburg so he could return home for family reasons, the team announced Tuesday.
The 29-year-old led his team in assists, with 26, and in scoring among all defencemen with 32 points in just 34 games into his KHL career.
The KHL club is 25-14-4 with a roster filled with older and upcoming NHL talent, headlined by former Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov as well as the Montreal Canadiens’ 2024 first-round selection, Ivan Demidov.
DeAngelo suited up for 371 NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and, most recently, the Carolina Hurricanes, before signing a one-year contract to head to Russia at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.
