Former Trump Allies’ Mea Culpas Are Too Little Too Late

It’s been a busy week for Dickensian ghosts, haunting the dreams of former Trump friends and allies with visions of an afterlife wrapped in the heavy chains they forged in life.

In a commentary published by US News & World Report, former NBC Chief Marketer John Miller apologized for making Donald Trump seem like a “very stable genius” on The Apprentice.

Miller, who retired from NBC in 2022 after more than 40 years with the network, led the team that marketed The Apprentice. In the commentary, he takes responsibility for creating the monster that is now Trump by marketing the illusion that Trump was a “super-successful businessman who lived like royalty.” He admits to ignoring Trump’s multiple bankruptcies and that actual, successful business leaders were too busy running their companies to participate in the show. This is why NBC chose to feed Trump’s “unfillable compliment hole” by making him the show’s star.

There’s a lot in Miller’s statement that would have been nice to hear back in 2016 or even 2020. This admission and apology is another hole in the sinking ship that is Trump’s campaign. The old man looks like a loser, and there’s nothing rich, white politicos hate more than being associated with a loser.

Even the world’s most malignant turtle, Mitch McConnell, has finally turned on his favorite blunt instrument. In a forthcoming biography about the Kentucky senator, McConnell refers to the GOP’s presidential candidate as “stupid, ill-tempered,” and a “despicable human being.”

We know, Mitch, we know.

We also know that Trump was just a stupid, ill-tempered means to your despicable ends. Now that he’s outlived his usefulness, McConnell is just another rat jumping ship and making a profit off it with a book deal. And no, we’re not going to forgive you, or everyone who made money off of The Apprentice, for inflicting this pig-headed numbskull on the country.

The avalanche of former cabinet members, allies, associates, and general members of the Republican party who have spoken out against Trump and endorsed Kamala Harris for president sure makes it feel like Trump is destined to lose. But don’t get comfortable, people. There are 17 days left before the end of this election cycle.
