“I’m not proud of all the choices I’ve made. Was I prepared to risk everything?” Republic Pictures debuted the first full trailer for Rob Peace, an indie drama that is also the second feature film directed by English actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (following The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind). This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to mostly positive reviews, though not really a ton of buzz. Directed, adapted by, and starring Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (as his father), Rob Peace follows the true story of a brilliant young man named Robert Peace, torn between his father’s shadowed past and his own promising future. Raised by his devoted mother, Rob risks everything he has worked for to free his imprisoned father. He ends getting into and studying chemical engineering at Yale, in the top of his class, while also leading a double life selling especially potent marijuana to make extra money to hire lawyers for his father. Jay Will stars as Rob, with the cast including Ejiofor, Mary J. Blige, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Michael Kelly, Mare Winningham, and Camila Cabello. It’s a good film – I was impressed by how far it goes telling this story.
Here’s the first official trailer for Chiwetel Ejiofor’s film Rob Peace, from Paramount’s YouTube:
“Robert Peace grew up in an impoverished section of Newark and later graduated from Yale with degrees in molecular biophysics & biochemistry while on scholarship. Peace led a dual life in academia & research while also earning six figures selling marijuana. Based on Jeff Hobbs’ bestselling book. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s thoughtful adaptation of Hobbs’ biography examines Peace’s struggle to reconcile his academic ambitions with mounting economic & family pressures. Although his (Jay Will) talents are nurtured from childhood by his devoted mother (Mary J. Blige), he lives in the shadow of his father (Ejiofor) who is imprisoned for a murky double murder. Intellectually curious and restlessly entrepreneurial, Peace lives a divided life, tenaciously working in a university research lab while secretly raising extra cash for his dad’s defense.“
Rob Peace is directed by the acclaimed English actor / writer / filmmaker Chiwetel Ejiofor, now making his second feature film after directing The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind previously, plus a few other short films. The screenplay is also written by Chiwetel Ejiofor, adapted from the bestselling book “The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace” written by Jeff Hobbs. It’s produced by Antoine Fuqua, Rebecca Hobbs, Jeffrey Soros, Simon Horsman, Andrea Calderwood, Kat Samick, Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet. This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Republic Pictures will debut Ejiofor’s Rob Peace in select US theaters starting on August 16th, 2024 this summer. Who’s interested in this one?
