“We are here to neutralize, not to help or negotiate.” Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for The Shadow Strays, the latest action film from Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto. It just premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival in Midnight Madness and will be streaming on Netflix on October 17th this month. Codename 13, a 17-year-old assassin, is suspended due to a sloppy mission in Japan. But she meets 11-year-old Monji, who loses his mother, and decides to save him. Aurora Ribero stars as 13 – an assassin determined to rescue a child from a crime syndicate, even if it means going against her own mentor. “Not since The Night Comes for Us has Indonesia’s preeminent architect of ultra-violent action, Timo Tjahjanto, conducted such a meticulous martial arts massacre. Opening with a bravura set piece laying waste to dozens of yakuza, his latest proceeds as a kind of taxonomy of the action genre with a string of sword fights, shoot-em-ups, and old-fashioned fisticuffs…” It also stars Hana Pitrashata Malasan and Taskya Namya. The footage looks pretty good, I’m ready to watch and dive in. Hoping for even more unforgettable fight scenes.

Via TIFF: “Stripped of her past and trained in the deadly art of fucking your shit up, adolescent assassin Codename 13 (Aurora Ribero) works diligently for a clandestine collective of killers known as The Shadow. After a mission goes sideways in Japan, her mentor, Umbra (Hana Malasan), picks up the fumble, but boots her to Indonesia on a disciplinary probation. While laying low in the slums of Jakarta, a chance encounter with a young boy who has run afoul of a local crime syndicate soon embroils the restless and rebellious 13 in an unsanctioned crusade, inciting a bevy of bloody battles that paint the town every shade of red, as well as drawing the ire of her merciless management.” The Shadow Strays is both written & directed by acclaimed Indonesian action filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, director of the movies May the Devil Take You, The Night Comes for Us, The Big 4, Macabre, Killers, and Headshot (and the upcoming sequel Nobody 2). Produced by Wicky V. Olindo & Anne P. Ralie. This premieres at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival in Midnight Madness. Netflix will release The Shadow Strays streaming on Netflix starting October 17th, 2024 this fall. Solid?
