A 10-year-old girl has been found dead with her throat slashed on the Gold Coast, triggering a homicide investigation.

Emergency services were called to a unit on Central Pl in Carrara by a male relative of the child about 6pm on Tuesday.

A crime scene was then declared and a homicide investigation was launched.

“At this point in time, we are treating the death of the 10-year-old girl as suspicious, and investigations are currently underway in relation to the demise of the girl,” Inspector Lou Serafim told reporters on Tuesday night.

Serafim did not reveal whether police had recovered a weapon but said the girl lived at the address where her body was found and her next of kin had been notified.

Forensic examinations will now determine how long she was at the property before the triple-0 call was made.

Serafim said the relative who called police, and nearby residents, had been “very cooperative” and were assisting authorities.

“My staff that attended as first responders and also the emergency services from the Queensland Ambulance Service have entered a scene that is quite traumatic,” she said.

“Those officers and the paramedics are receiving internal counselling.”

A large police presence remains at the home on Tuesday evening.

No charges have been laid.
