Like Voltron itself, the cast for the upcoming movie is assembling nicely. After years of attempting to get a live-action Voltron movie into theaters, it is coming together nicely under Amazon MGM under the direction of Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for movies like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice. The film will be based on Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which itself was a combination of two separate anime, Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. During its original run, Voltron was the top-rated syndicated animated series, so interest in adapting it into a feature film has been a high priority for over a decade.
Deadline reveals that Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim have joined the cast of Voltron. They join Henry Cavill and Daniel Quinn-Toye in the upcoming film. Rawson Marshall Thurber will direct from a script he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman. Amazon MGM. No plot details or characters are known, but it is safe to assume that Cavill, Quinn-Toye, Brown, Ora, and Kim are set to play the five pilots that drive the lion mechs that can combine into the giant Voltron. A filming date has not been confirmed yet for the upcoming adaptation.
Sterling K. Brown is best known for his Emmy Award-winning performances in American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson and This Is Us. He has also starred in blockbuster films like Black Panther and Frozen II, and was recently nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role in American Fiction. Rita Ora is a world-renowned pop star who has appeared in movies like Fifty Shades of Grey, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, and Descendants: The Rise of Red. John Kim can currently be seen on Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions, which debuted on November 21, 2025.
Amazon MGM is Aiming High for ‘Voltron’
Despite the box office failure of Red One, Amazon MGM is still investing heavily in big-budget blockbuster films for theatrical release. It is now shifting towards adaptations of popular animated series like Voltron and the upcoming Masters of the Universe. Voltron and Masters of the Universe have a lot in common, as they both are versions of famous 1980s cartoons that have assembled an impressive cast that also recently had animated series on Amazon’s biggest streaming competitor, Netflix.

Is Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Red One’ a Box-Office Success?
Depending on perception, Red One is either a box-office disaster or a strategic marketing play for Amazon.
Voltron has the benefit of the audience’s nostalgia not only for the 1980s animated series but also for Netflix’s very popular Voltron: Legendary Defender. With multiple generations of fans and an eclectic cast that mixes respected award winner (Sterling K. Brown), action star (Henry Cavill), music star (Rita Ora), and newcomers (Daniel Quinn-Toye and John Kim) into a team, Voltron is looking to be a movie to watch out for. With Ora signed on, hopefully, she will record a great tie-in song for the film. There is currently no official release date set for Amazon MGM’s Voltron, and while it’s unclear when it is expected to bow out in theaters, expect it to release on the Prime Video platform at some point, too.
