Verstappen found himself in fifth and only 14 seconds behind title rival Lando Norris by lap 27. Crucially when Nico Hulkenberg brought out the virtual safety car Red Bull stayed out gambling in wet weather conditions a red flag would beckon. The beneficial incident would occur due to Franco Colapinto. Consequently, Verstappen jumped Norris, passed Ocon for the race lead and set the fastest 17 laps of the Grand Prix.

“We stayed out of trouble, made the right calls, we stayed calm, and we were flying. All of these things together. I mean unbelievable. To win here from so far back on the grid,” the 27-year-old said post-race.

Lacking the title fight context, this remains one of the best drives that only the legends can realise. Only five Grand Prix have been won from 17th or lower and in the modern era with abysmal Pirelli wet weather tyres Verstappen stood taller than the rest.
So much debate surrounded the Dutchman post Austin and Mexico centring on his poor driving standards, including from myself. In Brazil, a complete contrast occurred. Calculated, composed and calm Verstappen swept past his competitors with ease. Notably passing Australian Oscar Piastri into turn 1, a rival with superior pace.
Overwhelmingly this cements Verstappen’s credibility as the standout figure in F1.
From start to finish in season 2024 Verstappen has been paramount to this world championship, more than his RB20. A finished product and a walking work of art, he has been the point of difference despite pace from McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes having their moments in the sun. A statement was made, and the war was won. The car adorned with No.1 will once again take its place atop the throne.
Will Red Bull be able to reaffirm its position at the forefront? It still seems improbable. Nonetheless, with the calibre of Verstappen, anything is possible even in the bleakest of races. He can be considered reckless, aggressive and defensive but those traits made him a champion soon to be four times over. His rivals will continue in their conquest but for now, it remains in vain.
