Inmate hit by car after escaping van on I-40

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An inmate at the Shelby County Corrections Center broke out a window of a transport van and escaped before he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 40, the sheriff’s department said Thursday.

The inmate was identified as Elijah Jenkins, 27. He was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

The sheriff’s office says Jenkins was being taken back to the facility on I-40 near Danny Thomas Boulevard around 12:30 p.m., when he broke out the window and escaped.

He was found around 12:50 p.m. on I-40 between Jackson Avenue and Faxon Avenue, apparently having been struck by a vehicle, they said.

The responsible vehicle left the scene.
