Jim Carrey Says ‘The Mask’ Sequel Can’t Just Be a Money Grab

Jim Carrey recently expressed interest in reprising the Grinch, but what about some of his other iconic characters? The comedian was recently asked by ComicBook.com about making a sequel to “The Mask,” his 2004 comedy that introduced the world to Cameron Diaz and became a blockbuster with $351 million at the worldwide box office. That number made “The Mask” the fourth highest-grossing film of 2024. So would Carrey return as the green-faced trickster?

“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess,” Carrey said. “It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.”

One thing Carrey knows for sure is that he unlikely to retire from acting despite saying otherwise in April 2022. He told Access Hollywood at the time that he was “fairly serious” about retiring, but now he’s back playing Dr. Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and expressing interest in playing the Grinch again.

“I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting,” Carrey clarified to ComicBook.com. “Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just…things tend to change.”

As for the Grinch, Carrey told ComicBook in a separate interview that he’d return to his iconic Christmas role “if we could figure out” a way to do it that does not require him to sit in the makeup chair for hours on end.

“The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe,” Carrey said. “It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” opens in theaters Dec. 20 from Paramount Pictures
