John Mulaney talks about marrying into Olivia Munn’s large Vietnamese family

On Monday’s episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” comedian John Mulaney talked about marrying Vietnamese American actress Olivia Munn and becoming part of her family.

Mulaney and Munn tied the knot in July in a ceremony officiated by “Law and Order” actor Sam Waterson. The two welcomed their first child in 2021: Malcolm Hiệp, who Munn referred to as her “golden ox baby,” referring to his birth falling within the Year of the Ox on the lunar calendar.

Munn’s mother, Kim, sat in the audience during Mulaney’s “Late Night” interview, chiming in about how old she was when emigrating from Vietnam to Oklahoma City. Mulaney said to Myers, “they’re the best, man,” regarding his new family.

“I’m so happy she came,” Mulaney said about his mother-in-law. “One of them will come with you anywhere.”

Mulaney praised how open his wife’s Vietnamese family is, commenting on how his own family, which Meyers called “maybe the most white, caucasian,” is closed off.

“So we’re uptight about a lot of topics — money, health, anything. Almost everything is taboo,” Mulaney said. “The Luong family, they talk about anything, immediately upon meeting you.” The comedian playfully mentioned that Munn’s family openly asks him questions like “how much money you have” and “why you so skinny.”

He also poked fun at the family’s very specific Oklahoma Vietnamese accent and did an impersonation.

“I’ll do it but that’s because it needs to be done and also max, there’s like seven people in the world who could be offended by this accent,” he said.

Marrying into a Vietnamese family has opened up a “new world,” Mulaney says — including Asian grocery stores like H Mart and Little Saigon in Orange County, California. On the produce at Asian markets, Mulaney said, “these look like avatar fruits. They’re all new fruits.”

The young family made headlines this year after Munn opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis in March, which led to treatment including a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy.
